Philip Sutherin Obituary

Philip Martin Sutherin, age 83, passed away on May 2, 2022 in Pocatello, Idaho surrounded by his family. He was preceded in death by his sweet wife Opie Looking Sutherin, and his three daughter's Leila Sutherin, Gayla Sutherin, and Corina Stromberg. Survivors include his son Gaylen Sutherin, his wife Marlene Sutherin, his son Corwin Sutherin, and his wife Bobbie Sutherin. He has 10 grandchildren, and 10 great grandchildren.

Phil was born in Hollywood, California, he was the only Child to Stanley and Rachel Sutherin born on August 25, 1938. He Joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints when he was 19, and a few months later served a mission to the Western States. After serving a two-year mission, he met the love of his life, Opie Looking from Frazier, Montana and they were married and later sealed in the Los Angeles Temple.

He graduated from Pierce Community College with a degree in Dairy Husbandry where he then worked for several dairy farms in California, Arizona, and Utah. He later worked for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints managing dairy farms in Idaho and Washington State. In 1983, he started driving over the road as an independent truck driver, then was hired by a trucking company Consolidated Freightways. Phil retired from truck driving and he and Opie moved to Teton, Idaho in 1998 and fell in love with the area, the town, and the people. He served for several years on the Teton City Council, then was elected for three different terms as Mayor of the City of Teton. Phil absolutely loved the City of Teton and the people! He retired from Mayor in December of 2020.

Phil had several church callings including ward and stake missionary, scout master several times, and served as a counselor in two different bishoprics. One of his favorite callings was when he served for several years in the Rexburg Temple as a temple worker. Phil was an accomplished singer as a tenor singing in several choirs and barbershop quartets. He had a great love for the outdoors including camping, hunting, boating, and hiking. One of his biggest interests was sports. In his younger days, he played on several baseball teams, and when he got older, he loved to watch pretty much any sport that was in season.

Phil was known for being strong willed and a hard worker who loved his wife, family, and the Lord. He will definitely be missed by those who knew and loved him!
