Alfred Neuenswander Obituary

Alfred Charles Neuenswander

In loving memory of Alfred, our beloved father, grandfather and great grandfather who passed away on June 4, 2021. In his final moments we were blessed to have him at home where we were able to surround him with our love and gratitude.

Alfred was born to Alfred and Louise Neuenswander on January 16, 1930 in Boise, Idaho. He lived in Reno for 91 years. Alfred was married to DeLores Neuenswander for 56 years before her passing in 2009. They owned the Stardust Lounge (on Wells Ave) and later the Silver Spur Motel (on West 4th St).

He played minor league baseball with the Boise Pilots from 1948-1951 as a pitcher. He was then drafted into the Army and proudly served on the front lines. His service for our country was an act of heroism and he received many medals of honor.

He was the most amazing, kind, funny and loving dad as well as a devoted grandfather and great grandfather. His love rained down on his family and we felt loved, protected, and cared for. There are no words to adequately describe how much he will be missed.

He is survived by his daughters Cynthia Zakrevsky and Kelly Thieme; his grandchildren Tarin Velotta,Tysca Strickler, Kyle Rove, Cory Rove, Mishon Rove and Sean Louis Rove; great grandchildren Natalie and Katie Velotta, Elon & Julien Rove, Olivia & Dominic Hurst, Hanorah & Celeste Rove and Rachel Rove. He is also survived by his brother Roy Neuenswander and his cousin Dottie Carpenter.

One of his greatest passions was cycling which spanned over 59 years. He was a long-time member of the Reno Wheelmen Bicycle Club and later the Procrastinating Peddlers where he enjoyed his Sunday cycling rides. He rode over 10,000 miles a year and participated in dozens of bicycle races across the country. The races included the Chico Wildflower Century Ride, Senior Nationals, the Geiger Grade Hill Climb, the Mt. Rose Time-Trial, Death Valley Ride and the Lake Tahoe Century Ride. He won many awards and trophies. His favorite ride was to Verdi with his special group of cycling friends. He was an inspiration to everyone in the cycling community. A kind heart, yet a ferocious warrior on any hill climb. He always had a big smile for everyone. Alfred was still riding his bicycle around our neighborhood at 88 years of age!

Thank you for the outpouring of love and condolences for our dad, grandpa and great grandpa. Our world will not be the same without him. We love you Daddy, Grandpa, Baba, Sonny and Albertini.

My name is Dick Miller, and I knew Al for many years and bicycled with him numerous times. I always enjoyed his company on and off the bike and I miss having him around. May he rest in peace.

It saddened me to hear of Al's passing. I just heard about it today from a fellow cyclist at a party I was attending. I rode with him a few times some years ago and I knew him before that at some places we used to frequent. May you rest in peace Al.

Rest in peace Uncle Sonny! He would always make me laugh when visiting him, Aunt DeLores, Cynthia and Kelly. Sammy his Pomeranian would spin in circles!

So sorry to see this. I always enjoyed running into Al out cycling. Such a nice man and so fun to talk to about the old days in Reno. My best to his family.
