C. Moore Obituary

On August 7, 2010 with his loving wife at his side, Claude Phillip (Phil) Moore passed away. Phil was born August 16, 1931, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, to Claude Phillip Moore and Opal Marie Hinson Moore. Phil was also the foster son of Dewey Sampson, Sr, the first Native American to serve in the Nevada State Legislature.
In 1942, Phil moved to Verdi, Nevada, with his mother, brother Norman and sister Barbara. Phil joined the U S Air Force when he was 15, having completed only 2 years at Reno High. He later served in the U S Navy, served in the U S Army as a Special Agent in the Counter Intelligence Corps (CIC) and as 1st Sgt, 107th Ranger Company. He then attended UNR receiving a B S, Personnel Management, was a Distinguished Military Graduate and was commissioned 1st Lt, U S Army in 1959. He later served as a U S Army Captain in Vietnam where he received the Combat Infantryman Badge (CIB), two Bronze Stars, the Air Medal, the Purple Heart and the Army Commendation Medal. He retired from the U S Army as a Captain in 1971. Phil obtained an MBA from Golden Gate University in 1970 and a Juris Doctor from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law in 1974. Phil moved back to Reno in 1976 where he worked as a Deputy Sheriff, Washoe County, with positions as Administrative Deputy and Detective, retiring in 1991. He also taught Criminal Law and Administration of Justice courses at TMCC, 1979-1991. Phil was elected Public Administrator, Washoe County, in 1995 and served for four years, retiring in 1999.
Phil had a huge personality, firm thoughts and beliefs, and was a loving, caring, sensitive man beneath his tough exterior. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved camping, fishing, hunting, barbecuing and a good party. He was a member of the Humboldt Hunt Club for many years and enjoyed the time he spent there. He loved to entertain friends and family with his many stories and experiences. He will be missed by his family and many friends.
Phil was preceded in death by his son Dallas, daughter Terry, his Father, Mother and Foster Father. He is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Beatrice, sons David and Daniel (Rae Ann), brother Norman, sister Barbara (Stan), grandchildren David, Jr, Sam, Randi, Kevin and Cassandra and great grandchildren Benjamin, Forest, Ryan and Garrett, his nephews Paris and Troy and his nieces Monique and Phyllis Marie.
Per Phil's wishes, no services will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to your favorite charity.

Bea and Family - words cant express the admiration and appreciation I have felt for Phil since we met and served together in Vietnam in 1966 - yes he was a man of strong opinions but he also had a heart of gold and would do anything for his friends and what he felt was right. A great man and patriot, unique and special who we will all miss -

Grandpa Phil, Thank you for introducing me to hunting and fishing. You have inspired my life with all of your life experiences. You took care of me in place of my own father, and through you I came to understand what a great man my father Dallas was. Even though our time spent together recently was brief, I enjoyed every minute with you and listening to your stories and pearls of wisdom, as well did my boys and wife. You have taught me to stay strong through life's day to day struggles. Thank you for all of your generosity with your great grandsons and also making my wife feel like a special part of the family. You were a great man and we will never forget you!

Beatrice, we were all very sorry to hear of Phil's passing. As your former neighbors, we always felt fortunate having such good neighbors living across the street from us...and running into Phil from time to time at work (Washoe County) was an added bonus. He will definitely be missed.
Our condolences go out to you and the rest of the family.

Phil was an inspiration to me in my career in law enforcement, corrections and jurisprudence. I'll always remember what you had taught me, both at TMCC and as a fellow law enforcement officer. You will be missed. Rest in Peace.

Phil, you handled and awful lot of adversity in your life with grace and dignity. God Bless You! The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want, He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside still waters, he restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for His name's sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death I will fear no evil, for you are with me, your rod and thy staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil, my cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. Psalms 23
