Harry Huneycutt Obituary

Dr. Harry C. Huneycutt

September 2, 1934

September 28, 2013

Dr. Harry C. Huneycutt, 79, died September 28, of unexpected heart problems following an elk hunting trip with his son. We are shocked and saddened by the sudden passing of this active, vibrant man whom we predicted would out live us all.

Dr. Huneycutt was born to Lucille and Harry Huneycutt, in Norton, Virginia. He spent hours combing the Appalachian Mountains, which fostered his love of the great outdoors. He graduated from Norton High School where, in his senior year, he helped lead the football team to their state championship. Dr. Huneycutt was a graduate of Virginia Military Institute. He completed his medical degree and residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Duke University Medical School. He served as a Military Physician in Germany from 1967-1970. After completing his military service, he made Reno his permanent home.

Dr. Huneycutt devoted his life to the practice of medicine, evidenced by his leadership, continual education, mentoring of students, and utilization of expert techniques. He delivered over 5,000 babies during his 43 years of caring for patients here in Reno. When he wasn't working, he could be found spending time with his family, traveling, or enjoying himself on the golf course.

Dr Huneycutt was an avid Wolf Pack fan and rarely missed a game. He was repeatedly recognized for his continued support and contributions to the UNR Athletics Department. He and his wife, Rita, annually sponsored the Academic Excellence Scholarship Banquet for our UNR athletic students. They were lead supporters for the Athletic Academic Center. As recognition for their years of support, Drs. Harry and Rita Huneycutt received the distinguished Jake Lawlor Award given at the 2011 Governor's Dinner. Dr. Huneycutt was a member of various community organizations including the Prospector's Club and the Covenant Presbyterian Church.

Dr. Huneycutt is survived by his wife, Dr. Rita Huneycutt; his children: Sherry Huebner, David Huneycutt (Anella), Alyson Huneycutt, Carrie Huneycutt, Dr. Kim Luikart (Bill); his grandchildren: Dr. Marissa Huebner (Zao Naegele), Erika Huebner, Lauren Huneycutt, Jake Huneycutt, Rita Luikart, Jackson Luikart; and his sister, Nancy Maxwell (Jim). He is now joining his youngest son Joseph Kenneth Huneycutt, who passed away the summer of 2010. Ken's wife, Terry Huneycutt, is now living in Hawaii.

Dr. Harry Huneycutt's years of service and devotion to excellence will be fondly remembered. He will be dearly missed by his patients, his friends and colleagues, and most especially, by his large, loving family.

The memorial service will be October 19, 2013, at the Reno Christian Fellowship Church, 1700 Zolezzi Lane, Reno, NV at 11:00 a.m. Everyone is welcome at this celebration of his life. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Dr Huneycutt's favorite charities: the UNR Student Athletic Scholarship Fund:

I was Dr. Huneycutt's pharma rep with Upsher-Smith Laboratories in Minnesota. I would come to Reno every three months and visit with him in his office. He and I had discussions about my product (Divigel), but our discussions about politics and sports were far more interesting. I found out about his passing and wanted to offer my condolences to his family and the wonderful staff at his medical practice. I will not forget this great man, who provided so many good things to the Reno community.

I was shocked and saddened to hear (through the grapevine) of the loss of my dear physician, whom I also considered a friend. My mother took me as a teenager to Stewart, Bynum, & Huneycutt. I met Harry and he fussed at me for over 40 years maybe 45. I trusted him so much, one procedure he asked if students could watch... Twenty student viewed OMG!!! My favorite story ... We were pretty sure I couldn't become pregnant & when I became, he asked if I knew how this had happened. We both laughed so much over the years. He was always curious about my career, my son, my research and my progress towards my doctorate. I will always miss his voice saying, 'Here comes trouble.' I am very sorry I didn't know about his passing that I could not honor his memory at the service. I honor his memory now and forever. Bless all of you who cared so much for this man, as we were blessed by his caring and help.

Dear Mrs. Huneycutt and children,
I introduced myself to you, Alyson and CarrieAnn at Dr. Huneycutt's beautiful Memorial service. I told you he saved my life at age 28 from a life or death situation. I went on to deliver two beautiful daughters. My husband and I will be eternally grateful for this gift. I was his patient since 1972/73. Dr. Huneycutt never rushed through an office visit, and always answered all my questions and concerns with patience and professionalism. I loved how he carried photos of his latest child or grandchild in his breast pocket to share with me. We talked of life in snow country, skiing, his love of family, hunting and his continuing education. I kept him entertained with all my traveling experiences in tropical locations, primarily the Bahamas. I am so sad we have all lost such an endearing person. I pray you and all the family will find the strength through your faith in God, to find a measure of happiness in all your beloved memories.
Sincerely,
Vikki Lawrence

I met Dr. Huneycutt in 1984. He helped me start my medical practice in Reno,as he did for a number of other Ob/Gyn doctors. He never benefited financially by doing this, but was kind enough to help us.We operated together a lot the first few years and he shared his amazing skills and wisdom. He was an excellent surgeon teacher and friend.Whenever I needed help with a difficult case he was willing day or night. He never gave me bad advice. Harry and I played golf many times together. He was always a "grinder" and would never give up,just as he was off the course.I will miss his riendship, medical opinions, advice and guidance.I can appreciate the loss that his family and friends must feel at this time. As a family you must be proud to have been part of his life. You are in our prayers.

You were born a mountain man in the heart of the Appalachians in Norton, VA. You became a high school athlete, a part-time coal miner, and a graduate of Virginia Military Institue. After completing Duke University Medical School, you finished a military tour in Germany.
Returning home, you became a true "Renaissance Man" as you heeded the call to "go west" and seek success in your medical field. Your service in Reno, NV has been nothing short of extraordinary. The record speaks for itself. I join a host of family members, friends and colleagues in heartfelt thanks for your courageous devotion to your fellowman.

I am so saddened to hear of the passing of Dr. Huneycutt(or Dr. H as I called him and got away with it)!We worked together for 25 years, and because of the trust and respect I had for him, he was also my doctor. I will truly miss my annual visit to you this year Dr. H after 30 years. You were so caring and always had health lecture for me on your newest discoveries from medical journals. I can't fathom finding another Doc. For years I never even had a general Doc because you were so good and took the time to listen to all my ailments. May you be blessed on your journey. If we need doctors when we get to heaven, I'll be making an appointment. Peace and Love, Gwen Lentz

To Mrs. Huneycutt and David Huneycutt
I was very sadden to hear about Dr Harry Huneycutt's passing on September 28th of 2013.
I had the opportunity to meet Dr. Harry Honeycutt during the week of Sept 24th 2013, while we were elk hunting together. I never meet him before the hunt, but what I did find out from him while hunting was that he loved his wife, his work and hunting.

Uncle Harry. To me was larger than life. When I saw him as a little girl, I was always a bit nervous at first. Of course, hanging out with Kenny, you were certain to get in trouble. But then he would engage me and I would have fun visiting and being with his family. As an adult, I had so much respect for him. As a consultant, he helped me through infertility and supported me as I adopted my children. I will miss you Uncle Harry and will see you on the other side. Until then, catch up with Kenny. I love you both very much.

He will be greatly missed. He was my Mothers dr., my sisters dr, my nieces dr., our whole family. When it came time for my first granchild to come into the world he was no longer delivering, but he sent my daughter-in-law to his colleague. When I go into see him it isn't an office visit till we visited about Austin and he finds out how everyone here is. On one trip I also ask him what will I do when you retire, and he told me not to worry, so I never have. He was a wonderful dr. and gentleman who will be greatly missed. Rest in peace dear friend.

I am truly saddened by the loss of such a fine, caring man. He delivered all three of my children as well as held my hand to cry over the one I lost. He was more than a Dr, he was a friend a part of our family as well.
He truly is the only Person I can think of who after telling me I needed surgery and now, listened to the fact I needed to wait two weeks because I had a deer tag and understood. He laughed but he understood. He always had a story to tell and a smile. The last time I saw him,he came out in the waiting room to see my grandson. We talked about austin and the girls and he talked about his family and how proud he was of them. Especially his grand daughter the Dr. He was a wonderful man and we are all blessed for the time, the care, and the blessings he gave us and brought into this world. He will never be forgotten. And he will always be missed.

I was shocked and saddened to learn of Harry's passing. Harry hired me as his office manager for his first sole practice in 1972-73. We had a great staff Kay, Judy, Kay and Jean in our small office on 5th St. until we moved into our big office on Arlington Ave. He was a great boss always patient and kind and always had a twinkle in his eye. He was greatly loved and respected by his patients. Unfortunately, I moved away from the area in 1975 but always cherished the time I worked for him. His family always came first and I know they will greatly miss him. God bless you Harry and rest in peace in the lovingly hands of the Lord. My thoughts and prayers are with the entire family.

I was saddened to hear of Dr Huneycutt's passing. He was my Dr while I was pregnant with 3 out of my 5 children as well as when I lost a precious baby in my 15th week. His empathy was amazing...he also told me that he would not tie my tubes as I had asked him to after I delivered my baby that had passed away...but told me to wait 6 weeks...then he would go ahead if that is what I still wanted. I have my youngest son, whom without Dr Huneycutt's foresight in having me wait to make such a decision, would not be here today. I remember every aspect of that conversation..and I look at my son now and am eternally greatful.
r.i.p. Dr Huneycutt..May the good Lord comfort your loved ones during this time.

I am so shocked and saddened by Dr. Huneycutt's passing. I have been a patient of his since 1972, and up until he died. He delivered both of my children and one grandchild, and was my now grown daughter's doctor as well. Dr. Huneycutt was always there for me. Even when he had other patients waiting for him, he never rushed through an exam and would always sit down and chat and answer my questions, and just talk about life in general. He will be greatly missed. Rest in Peace, dear Dr. Huneycutt.
