James Ely Obituary

JAMES ROBERT "BOB" ELY

February 17, 1957

January 25, 2015

Bob was embraced by his father in heaven at the age of 57, after a brief illness. He was born at Washoe Medical Center and attended school in Sparks, gracing the halls of Sparks High School where he excelled in baseball and wrestling, graduating in 1975. After attending college in Idaho for a year, he returned home and went on to work for Sierra Pacific Power Company from May, 1977 to October, 2014. Bob was very involved with the Reno Rodeo Association where he served as a committee member for 14 years. He was a devout Seattle Seahawks fan and we are sure he will be rooting for them from above. Although he left us much too soon, he will be remembered as a kind hearted son, brother, father and friend . He leaves behind his mother Ruth Ely, sisters Barbara Miller (Dave) and Cathy Ely (Chad), brother Dennis Ely (Lisa), sons James Ely, Jr. and Jacob Ely, granddaughter Madelyn Grace Ely, and aunt Cleo Judd (Val), along with numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, James Nathan Ely.

A public memorial service will be held at the Sparks Church of the Nazarene, 2200 EI Rancho Drive, Saturday, January 31st, 1:00 pm. Please feel welcome to share memories and condolences.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Reno Rodeo Foundation, 500 Ryland Street, Reno, NV 89502.

Jim was a good man and a great friend. I'll miss his jokes, his sarcasm and more than anything his stories. Nobody could tell a story like Jimmy. He made you feel like you were there everytime. He will be missed greatly.

Bob was a decent, genuinely nice guy. We talked a few months ago and I will remember his humor and kindness. Rest in peace.

And now Bob joins the ranks of other "Fallen Linemen" who have served our community with their always there when we need them service. I remember him as "The quiet one" who very seldom would raise his voice when involved in a sometimes heated discussion of sports and other topics. He would usually just offer a curt and piercing remark to end the discussion. His looks and demeanor some times reminded me of Tom Sellick in the movie Quigly Down under. I will miss his earthly presence and rest in knowing that my old friend Jim welcomes him to his everlasting resting place with our lord in heaven.

I will miss Jim so much. He was a wonderful Foreman in the Meter Operations Department at NV Energy. I am so happy I was able to work with him and enjoy his great sense of humor, humility, and his kindness. Jim and Jim, enjoy each other's company. Ruth and family, I pray that knowing Jim was so very much loved will give you great comfort as you go this time of grief.

To Bob's mother and family, I am sorry for your loss. Bob and I went through school together. If I recall, beginning with junior high. We weren't close friends. More like acquaintances. Probably because we lived in different parts of town; on opposite sides of the "Oddie Blvd" divide. Nonetheless, the few times our paths crossed after high school Bob always remembered me, never failed to approach me, and treated me as a long lost friend. I will always remember him for that and for a remarkable calm and kindness he possessed. Thank you, Bob. I am sorry that you are gone. I look forward to seeing you again, one day.
