John Logar Obituary

John Richard Logar, age 50, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, April 13, 2010. John was the son of Nancy Charlene Logar and Ronald John Logar, both of Reno, Nevada. John was born on September 5, 1959 at St. Mary's Hospital in Reno, Nevada.
John attended Reno High School, graduating in 1977. He enrolled at the University of Nevada Reno with a major in business management and communications. John transferred to Lassen College, in Susanville, California, where he received degrees in Education and Gun Smithing. He graduated with honors. John then moved to Anchorage, Alaska, where he received advanced gunsmith training with the Toklat Gun Company, one of the leading gunsmith companies in the country. John took advantage of all of the outdoor activities afforded by the Alaskan wilderness. He often commented that Alaska was an outdoorsman's dream, the most beautiful places he had ever seen. After one year of advanced training, he returned to Reno, Nevada, where he and his grandfather, Frank Logar, opened Precision Gun Works. John was skilled in all aspects of gun design, function and repair. He was a competitive target shooter and won several awards. John subsequently closed his business and decided to seek other employment and further his education.
John was employed by United Parcel Service, where he was promoted to a Management position in delivery logistics. While with UPS, John attended Morrison University, where he received a BS degree in Business Management. He graduated with honors and was Valedictorian. John lead a team of 4 supervisors and 135 transport drivers based in Nevada and Northern California. He prepared department business plans, budget and balanced score card goals; planned and oversaw driver training for new hires and annual certification; worked directly with the top 5% of parcel clients to maximize their warehouse layouts, efficient distributions and customer retention. While with UPS, John realized his interest was in the field of accounting. In 1997 John graduated from Morrison University with a BS degree in accounting. Again, John graduated with honors.
John was employed by one of Reno's leading accounting firms, Barnard Vogler & Co., Inc. where he was a staff accountant. In July, 2007 John accepted an accounting position with Renown Health. As a senior accountant, John implemented new processes and procedures to maximize efficiency and accuracy of financial information; assisted in the creation of new departments and entities; worked with department leaders to understand their financial results and advise them in attaining their budgetary goals; supervised staff accountants and reviewed their work, as well as performing general accounting functions. John was a senior accountant with Renown Health at the time of his death.
John's lifelong passion was the outdoors. He excelled at snow and water skiing, target shooting and golf. From a young age, John truly loved hunting, fishing and camping. With his father he spent many days in the field and on the water. He was also an avid fly fisherman, fishing in Alaska, Oregon, Nevada and Northern California. Since he was a young boy, John spent many days throughout the year at the duck cabin, located at the Canvasback Gun Club. He learned proper gun safety and respect for all wildlife, and instilled that knowledge and respect in his children. Some of his happiest days were spent in the beautiful Stillwater Wildlife Area. John was a member of the Canvasback Gun Club. He belonged to the National Rifle Association and Ducks Unlimited. Best of all, John shared his passion with his children, his wife, and his family and friends.
John is survived by his wife, Shelley; Shelley's children, Heath Silva, Tammy Severin and Chavon Gardiner; his mother, Nancy; his father, Ron; his step-mother, Sigrid Logar; his daughter, Stephanie Bren Logar (18), and his grandchild, Marley Faye Logar-McDermott (3 mo.); his son, Garrett Stuart Logar (17); his sister, Debra Lynn Wiseman (Idaho); his sister, Linda Lee Logar (Reno); Aunt and Uncle, Don and Mary Ann Wilkerson; his cousins, Donald Wilkerson and Jane McVeigh; niece Lindsey Howell, and nephew, Christopher Secary; his step-brothers, Brett and Rodd Garcia; and other family and friends, all of whom will miss him dearly.
John and his wife and children are Christians and were regular members and active in various Christian Churches in the area. A memorial service will be held at The Rock Church, 4950 Vista Blvd., Sparks, NV (355-7888), on Wednesday, April 28, 2010, beginning at 1:00 p.m. Pastor Art Lenon, will preside. John's remains will be cremated, and his ashes will be scattered at the Canvasback Gun Club, Stillwater Wildlife Area, Fallon, Nevada. Most of all, John will be remembered for his decency and for his devotion to his children and family.

Dear Lord,
I know you had a good reason to take our friend John. Since he often spoke of you in our presence, he must be with you now. We look for comfort during this time of loss, but we are filled with hope in knowing where he is. Young or old, weak or strong, we all have one common dream. One day we will be together, as it was and always will be.

I am so sorry for your loss. I knew John when he was a teenager and we used to hang at his parents Lake Tahoe home with his sisters, Debbie and Linda and Wilkersons'. So much fun water skiing and snow skiing. They were wonderful times and I will cherish them always. Sleep well John, you were loved and you will be missed.
