Joseph Burchett Obituary

Joseph Lee Burchett

July 16, 1927

July 28, 2014

Beloved father, husband, brother, grandfather, uncle, and friend, Joseph Lee Burchett passed into eternal life on Monday, July 28, 2014, quietly in his own home in Reno, Nevada, of natural causes, surrounded by his loving family. He was 87 years old.

Joe also had a residence in Wellington, Nevada, where he often spent time.

Joe was one of 3 children born to Freeman and Maimie Burchett in Bluefield, West Virginia on July 16, 1927. It was there he began his career of a perfect business man making his sales of chocolate bars as a young boy, selling door to door.

Joe joined the Navy at the young age of 16 years. He loved his country and served with pride, loving his time on the ships. Even then, his business talents were used.

Joe moved to Reno where his selling talents climbed as he owned Statewide Appliance, selling appliances, TVs and furniture. He also worked in real estate.

All of his life, Joe was a salesperson without peer. His charm and charisma were unmatched, because his good will was sincere, and every client left with a smile.

Joe was an active member of the Masons for many years. He was a lifetime member of Amity Lodge #4 in Silver City. He achieved the status of "Grand Master", and was very proud of the work he did as a Kerak Shriner for the Shriner Burn Center for Burned Children.

Always a generous man, Joe helped those that needed help, but always left a lesson with the people he helped. He supported many charitable organizations as well. In later years, as a landlord, he was a conscientious property owner, and it is doubtful that anyone who ever rented from him would not endorse his great heart and friendly approach to others.

Joe loved the outdoors, and some of his fondest moments were hunting and fishing with his brother, family, and friends.

Joe was predeceased by his brother, Freeman Burchett, Jr., and his wife, Betty B. Burchett also predeceased him.

He is survived by his stepson, Gordon Bailey (Pamela); step-daughter Denise Bailey, sons Thomas Burchett and Michael Kilby (in Germany); daughters Betty Jo Burchett, and Jenny Lou Burchett; two grandsons and one grand-daughter; by his sister, Dolores Burchet ("Little Dolores," or Dee); and nephew, John Burchett. Also by Patrick Gough, Joe's son-in-law, who has helped Joe tremendously.

A Requiem Mass will be held Friday August 1st at 10:00AM at Saint Thomas Aquinas Cathedral 310 West 2nd Street Reno, NV 89503.

If you were to sum up Joe's life "his life was a prayer in itself."

One of my fondest child hood memories was my sister and I riding our bikes to Park Lane mall to greet Gerald Ford who was making a campaign stop. We were so excited when that he shook our hand and even more excited when we were told we were to be on the evening news. We rode our bikes home, got our jar of paper route savings (mostly loose change) and went to see Mr. Burchett about buying our first TV so that we could watch ourselves on TV that night. He enthusiastically loaded my 3 sisters and I into the car and took us to Statewide Appliance, a store he owned. We looked at every TV in the store, picked out the smallest TV and nervously waited since we were not even sure we had enough money to pay for the smallest TV. He looked at our jar of money, poured it on the desk, left, and came back with the largest TV in Statewide Appliance. He told us we had “just enough money”. What a generous, kind, loving man he was and we will never forget his generosity and kindness. The entire Constantino family sends our love and hope that the selfless generosity and love he gave to so many others comes back to the Burchett family many times over.

I only knew Joe the last year of his life. If he lived his entire life like that last year, with a great attitude, grace, and kindness to everyone I can only imagine how he was when he wasn't sick. I know he touched a lot of lives and made a big difference in many, including mine. It was a pleasure to know him.
