On August 8, 2013, Robert C. Bateson, 85, passed away peacefully in the home that he built with his own hands 53 years ago.
He was born in New York on January 4, 1928. Robert married Arlene Dodge on November 17, 1951 in Tilton, New Hampshire. In July 1955, they moved to Reno where he and his loving wife raised eight children. He worked at Nevada Bell as a switchman and mechanic for 25 years. During this time he also served 18 years as union president for CWA Local 9413. Following retirement, he drove for Elderport, worked for an electronics company, and had a handyman business. He was never a man to sit idle, and the value of hard work is his legacy. If he was not at work, he would be at home tinkering in his garage or working in his yard.
He was an avid hunter, fisherman, and gardener. He loved attending UNR football games and watching the 49'ers on T.V.
Robert was preceded in death by his mother, Hazel; two brothers, Nicky and Donald; son-in-law Felipe (Dawn's husband); one grandson, Jake; and his beloved son, Daniel.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Arlene; his sister, Susan; seven children and their spouses- Debbie and her husband, Gary; Richard and his wife, Janice; Dwain and his wife, Gay; Delene and her husband, Matt; and Diane, Donna, and Dawn; twenty grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
A private family gathering will be held at a future date.
