Ronald Granata Obituary

Ronald Craig Granata

November 4, 1951

January 31, 2016

Ronald C. Granata, 64, passed away Sunday, January 31, 2016 surrounded by his loving family in Reno, Nevada. "Ron, Ronnie, The Old Man, Pops" had a heart of gold and a head like a bull. He was passionate, loving, dedicated, hard-working, and generous. Ronnie was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Helen Granata and is survived by his children; Julie Mortara (husband Chris) and Angelo Granata (wife Sherie); grandchildren; Millie Rose Granata, Cody James Curtis, Stella Teresa Mortara and Gianna Antonella Mortara; brothers; Denny and Gary Granata (wife Carla) and sister Janet Labarry (husband David); and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Ronnie was born in Reno, Nevada on November 4, 1951, and grew up in a traditional Italian home where his mom cooked delicious meals and his dad worked tirelessly at Martin Iron Works as president. Ronnie attended Wooster High School where he had many friends due to his jovial and humorous personality. Ronnie enjoyed water skiing, visiting with friends, and had many admirers. His fun didn't last too long though because he wanted to follow his dad's legacy. Bill was known as "The Man of Iron," and Ronnie was utterly proud of that. Ronnie also worked hard at Martin Iron Works starting at age 13 sweeping the floors then sorting bolts onto an apprenticeship, then a journey-man ironworker, becoming foreman, to superintendent and onto becoming vice president of reinforcing steel (rebar). His bull-headedness, persistency, and knowledge of the trade helped Martin Iron Works "Martin" remain successful. He was so proud of Martin, and I'm sure many of you either worked with him or received an MIW hat from him as a symbol of his pride. He was known to wear his MIW shirts all time. Martin was his life…except for his children who came first.

Julie and Angelo were his everything. When they had babies, they were his everything too. Ronnie enjoyed supporting Julie in her numerous gymnastics meets and cherished her cards she gave him sometimes putting them in frames. He was Angelo's baseball coach at Reno National Little League and his hunting partner. Dedicated to both, Ang would have a baseball or football game, and then they would jump in the truck and drive to Midas in the wee hours of the morning to do some deer hunting the next day. In his later years, he continued to hunt with his friends, children, and grandchildren. He liked riding in the car with Stella and talking about, "Uh oh, Spaghettio." Together they laughed and laughed. "It's not funny exactly, Nonno!" Stella would say, and it was their little joke. Of course, he had to visit Millie Rose in Phoenix for birthdays and holidays. Together they would joke and laugh and give hugs. And with Gianna, he looked forward to her phone calls where she would say, "Hi Nonno," and chat. He loved his grandkids. He always said, "You kids are going to be taken care of," and they were. He showed them love and laughter joking about, "Don't be reer, be rad"; "gotcha,"and would give the wink and smile that would light up a room. He was a jokester with everyone and would want to be remembered for his laughter and love.

Ronnie was a beloved father, nonno, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, cousin, and best friend to many. His gregariousness, generosity, compassion, loyalty, dedication, and humor will be missed, but the memories will remain.

Viewing will be Friday, February 5th from 5-7pm at Walton's Funeral Home at 875 W. Second St. in Reno.

Funeral Services will be held at St. Luke's Lutheran Church at 2:00 on Saturday, February 6th at 3835 Lakeside Drive in Reno. Interment will be held on Monday, February 8th at 1:00 pm at Mt. View Cemetery.

Memorial contributions would be appreciated to: Nevada Bighorns Unlimited (Midas Chapter), P.O. Box 1161, Reno, NV 89504, or Reno National Little League, C/O Walton Funeral Home, at the address above.

Ran into Angelo today January 5th 2020. What a coincidence. He recognized me and immediately said you worked for my dad. I thought he had me mixed up with a ranch hand. But when he said Ron or as I knew him Ronny the memories came back all good so many days and years I worked for Martin iron. He was a tough guy with a golden heart. We hit it every day after he gave us our assignment. He was a good guy and I see him shining thru in his son Angelo. Thanks for saying hello.

I am very sad to hear of the passing of Ronnie. I didn't know him very well but I remember his kindness to me while I was employed at a local Construction Company. I felt as though I known him for a long time he was so happy and friendly. God Bless his family at this difficult time.

I was so saddened to read of Ronnie' passing. I had known him for many years. We both graduated in1969 him from Wooster and me from Reno High. He was always trying to get our classes together and he succeeded for the 25th reunion. He never gave up that was Ronnie. Remember his great parties with fun, great food and lots of laughs. He was always so kind and caring. When my sister died in 2001 Ronnie called me and came to her memorial even though he hardly knew her he did it to comfort me. He was wonderful. Every day is a gift from God and that was how he lived his life. Please know that our thoughts and prayers are with the entire Granata family. God Bless.

I knew of Ronnie cause my dad "Earl" had worked for MIW.
My oldest played Babe Ruth with Angelo and that gave me the opportunity to know Ronnie the person "not just the legend".
We lived around the corner from him so on those occations we could have conversations "he was always on move" we talked of work, business & always family.
I knew that good hearted, caring person, that always had a smile and a wave. " I will hang a "1" Christmas ornament year around for you"

Ron was our next door neighbor on California Avenue when my family (the O'Driscolls) lived there ...he was seriously one of the dearest sweetest human beings I have ever known- he even took down his backyard fence one summer for one of our wedding receptions so that we could have the extra room for all of our guests. My sincere condolences to the family -

About 20 years ago ( I guess it was....time sure flies by). I had just spent a few days way out in Buffalo Hiils scouting the beloved speed goat, tired dirty and on the trail headed home. A mile or so off the summit above Squaw Resevoir there's a little camp spot ( end of the trail if your driving a motor home ) into Poodle Mtn. That blistering hot August day I happened to see a motor home parked in the distance, closer and closer always wondering who is out there and lo n behold its my friends Ron, Gary and Angelo having a bunch of fun. What a welcome surprise. Of course nothing less than whatever they had in the cooler or on the grill was mine too. What a great bunch of guys. Angelo you probably don't recall that time in passing with me. But I remember my heart sank when your father told me how fast and why he drove back to Reno that day. I'm sure you are a fine young man. I know your Bro-in-law Chris. You guys stick together as families are the most precious gift that God has given us. My heart felt condolences to the Granata family.
Sincerely,

I met Ronnie many, many years ago as he lived across the street from my best friend Bob Williams. I always thought very highly of Ronnie, although our paths crossed infrequently. He was a exceptionally nice guy and a good man whom I have always respected. I wish the Granata family the best in this difficult time.

A true man of Steel. For all the good times through the years, you never missed a chance to make me smile. Special delivery on Thanksgiving "82" to Elko, Nv of a load of re-bar needed to keep HIS MEN Working. Always time to stop and let you know you were someone Special in his Life. His kids were always first and mentioned in every conversation. Ronnie was a literal Savior to family and friends. Live on in the Care and Keeping of our Lord and Master!!! You will definitely be His most entrusted Rod Buster that Heaven has ever seen. RIP my Brother as you will be truly missed. Love You Ron Dave Davidow Another Brother of the 70's

I am truly saddened that Ronny " the iron whisperer "has passed away. Ronny was a pal to all of us, and a great one at that. I really enjoyed the times we would have at the Gerlach ducks dinners and hobnobbing with Bev at the Miner's club next door to Bruno's. Son of a biscuit--those were some good times! God bless you Ronny, your family and all the people that surround you. I will miss you-but never forget you. Your neighbor, your friend--Thomas Pearce and Mom also.

My family has known Ronnie and his family since we moved to Reno in 1961. Although Ron was one year ahead of me in school, my brother, Sam, was a best friend to Ron's older brother , Gary. Our mother was a young widow and the Granada welcomed my brother and I into their home like an aunt and uncle. Ron carried on this family kindness! Denny, GaryGary, Janet and Family, we mourn your loss. Ronnie, rest in peace.

It's hard to believe that Ronnie and I were friends since kindergarten at Veterans Memorial Elementary and he put all the work into our friendship. He would call me every few months to check in on how I was doing and attended my parents funerals. He gave his caring and love freely. Such a wonderful man with a heart of Gold. I will so miss him but, as Dr. Seuss said "Don't cry because it's over. Smile because it happened" and he would want us to keep smiling and loving each other. Ronnie taught us how.
