Shirley Hansen Obituary

Shirley Hansen

Shirley Hansen passed away peacefully on July 1st with family by her side.

Shirley was born in Reno on February 16, 1921, the child of Phillip and "Mickey" Saturas. She graduated from Reno High School in 1939. After graduating she worked for the Tahoe Tavern at Lake Tahoe and then for Greyhound in Reno while attending college.

In 1945 she married Kenneth Hansen upon his return from England as a co-pilot on a bomber during World War II. Shirley had three sons, the last being born the day after her husband died from injuries suffered in an accident at their home. With the help of God, her church, family and friends she bravely met the challenge of raising 3 young boys by herself.

She returned to the University and received her teaching degree. Her first teaching job was at Central Junior High. Soon after, she began teaching at Libby C. Booth, and her last 16 years were spent at Clayton Junior High from which she retired after almost 30 total years. She was Teacher of the Month in January, 1974, and was a member and officer in Delta Kappa Gamma. She assured that all of her children also graduated from UNR. She faced another struggle when 2 of her sons were sent to combat in Vietnam but thanks to her constant prayers both returned home safely.

Upon retirement Shirley traveled to Europe, Israel and other destinations. She lived life with zest, hard work and a love of God, family and friends.

She is survived by her sons Lance, Dwight (Carmel), Kent (Char) and 7 grandchildren Kimberly Wilson (Joe), Luke Hansen (Autumn), Jessica Pelt (Remus), Stephanie Holmes (Richard), Scott Hansen, Benjamin Hansen (Karla) and Colby Goodman. She also has 11 great grandchildren.

A funeral service is scheduled for 11:00 AM, Monday, July 13, 2015 at St. Luke's Lutheran Church, 3835 Lakeside Drive, Reno, with a reception to follow at Rancho San Rafael's Ranch House. O'Brien Rogers & Crosby Funeral Home was entrusted with arrangements.

In Lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Reno-Sparks Gospel Mission.

Dear Hansen family,
We just found out today that our sweet wonderful "Auntie" Shirley passed away when we were out of town. We spent over 20+ years traveling to Hawaii, Oregon, and playing cards with her every Friday night with Melva and my parents, when they were here for the summers. The games and traveling stopped about four years ago when we lost members of the group. John and Shirley were always partners against Melva and myself.
We saw Shirley two weeks before she died and she was still gracious and sincerely sweet. We had many wonderful times and we will miss her dearly. Bless you Shirley.

I was saddened to read of the passing of your beautiful Mother.

Shirley had the kindest heart of anyone I've met - something she passed on to her Sons.

I was not aware of her loss until today, or I would have paid my respects in person.

She will always hold a special place in the hearts of Shawn and me.

She is in Heaven with my Dad who I recently lost.

When i was a schoolboy i lived about a block from her residence, and got to know her as Shirley Kidd. I cannot say she was a friend, but I was so impressed with her niceness that i remember her even today some seventy years later. May her stay in eternity be blessed by our Lord.

Mrs. Hansen put up with more than her share from Dwight and the Wild Bunch. I will always remember her being so calm and supportive. Deepest condolences to the family.

Saturday morning cartoons with Kent and Shirley's great breakfasts. Some of my best memories ever. We know she is watching down over you all and smiling. God bless.

I worked with Shirley at Clayton Middle School from 1978 thru 1983. I remember her as a kind and professional teacher. My sympathies go out to her entire family. She was a fine educator.

My great grandmother was very thoughtful and nice. She always gave us popsicles when we went to her house. It was very sad to let her go. She is with God now, hopefully having a great time.

Shirley was my second Mom and I love her dearly. I lived as much at her house as I did at mine with Lance, Dwight and Kent. She put up with a lot of craziness for sure. I will miss her and she will always be in my heart. My prayers go out to her and the boys. She is now with God and I know she will be smiling as always.
