Carolyn Haerr Obituary

Carolyn Sue Haerr, 74, of Spring City, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 11, 2023, at her home after a two-month battle with leukemia. She is survived by her husband, Christopher Haerr; daughter, Dina Haerr (Don) Hess; son, Greg (Amy) Haerr; seven grandchildren, Kit, Connor, Roiya, Brianna, Bella, Rowan and Brendan; and four brothers and a sister, Dale Lenear, June Roberson, Charles Lenear, David Lenear and Jim Lenear.

Carolyn was the most wonderful sister, wife, mother, and grandmother a family ever could have wished for. She and her husband, Christopher, grew up together and were best friends for their entire lives, and they were married for nearly 55 years. They were inseparable and loved spending time together, traveling to national parks and other scenic areas during their retirement, and creating priceless memories with their children and grandchildren.

Carolyn earned her BS in Nursing at Southern Illinois University and her MSN at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. She worked as a nurse for over 50 years in a career which she described as "everything but OB," including serving at the VA Hospital in St. Louis and as Director of Nursing at Dayton Hospital. Her career included hospital work, home health, and, after her theoretical retirement, school nurse for the Rhea County Schools, where she delighted especially in her ability to provide medical care for many children with limited access to healthcare. She was well known for her compassion and endless dedication to everyone she served.

Carolyn was ceaselessly active in her church and in her local community, and even in retirement she was constantly busy with volunteer work. She was a member of Spring City United Methodist Church for 45 years. She was an extremely active member of the United Methodist Women and served in many local, district, and conference offices, including serving as the Holston Conference UMW Vice-President and then as the Conference President. She passionately supported UMCOR (the United Methodist Committee on Relief) and other missions. One of her favorite missions was traveling once or twice per year with the Mexico Medical Mission team to the remote communities of Ixtepec and Tatocac, Mexico in the Sierra Madre mountains to provide medical care to people who otherwise lack any access to healthcare. Hundreds of people walk long distances to come to the clinic every time it is made available. The work of the Mexico Medical Mission was so critical to her that even though she was feeling tired and weak, she still went on the most recent trip April 29-May 7. We didn't know yet then why she was not feeling well, but she went and served to the best of her ability because she knew how much her medical expertise was needed.

Carolyn was infinitely kind, infinitely generous, and never stopped putting love, faith, and hope into constant daily practice. She rarely sat still because there was just too much she wanted to do. Our loss is immeasurable and our lives will never be the same without her.  She was the center of our family, the most intrinsic part of our family puzzle. She leaves behind not only an unfathomable hole in our family but in her entire community, where she served and loved without ceasing for all the decades of her life.

A memorial service will be held at the Spring City Methodist Church on Saturday, Aug. 19 2023, at 2 p.m. Her ashes will be interred at Hanna Cemetery in Noble, Ill.

In lieu of flowers, Carolyn requested that donations be made to UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief). One hundred percent of all donations reach a chosen mission project or ministry. It was a pleasure to serve with Carolyn on the Mexico Medical Mission trips. She was a blessing to all on the team and the people we served in Mexico. She will be missed not only for her service on the trip but support and encouragement even when she didn’t travel with us. It was an honor to know her. My deepest sympathy to all her family.

Carolyn IS a precious sister in Christ. I remember when she and Chris first came to Spring City and started attending Spring City United Methodist Church. She was also so kind and humble with a sweet beautiful spirit. Her love and service for others in so many different areas was an example for all of us. Her love for her family and most of all Chris was always quietly on display. She was an encourager and a prayer warrior for many. I was one of the recipients.
Now her faith has become sight as she has heard the words "well done! Enter into My Joy!"

I pray that yo , Chris and the rest of your family. receive the fullness our Heavenly Father comfort in the days to come.
The heartbreak of separation will only be for a short season - a season Carolyn would want you to live life to the fullest. Then a day will come when pain and grief will be a forgotten memory when we see our Lord and Carolyn face to face.

Our hearts hurt with yours.

What a blessing Carolyn was to her United Methodist Women/United Women in Faith Sisters. I had the pleasure of working with Carolyn when she was Holston Conference UMW President. She was loving, giving, and mission oriented and encouraged others to be likewise. I'm glad I had the opportunity getting to know Carolyn, and it comforting knowing that she is walking among the angels. She will truly be missed.

I hadn’t seen Carolyn in over 50 years but found out a few years ago that we were at Big Cedar near Branson at the same time. So we arranged to meet her and Chris! I am so glad that I was able to spend a little time visiting. Chris and the family are in my thoughts and prayers. She will truly be missed.

What a precious angel now in God’s care. Carolyn Haerr was one of the most selfless gentle persons I have ever known. Carolyn always cared for everyone with her special love and nurture. What a precious friend I had. We shared many great moments together working for the betterment of United Methodist Women and to be sure women, children and youth were our mission. There are no words that I can say other than God has received a gracious friend into his care. I truly love the Haerr family. What wonderful care you gave Carolyn especially during her last two months. Each of you holds a special place in my heart. With all my love
