John Chattin Obituary

John (Danny) Chattin

Born: December 12, 1940 | Died: June 30, 2025

John D. (Danny) Chattin of Spring City/Evensville, TN passed away peacefully on May 30, 2025, with members of his family present. He was born at home on December 12, 1940, in Rhea Springs, TN, the last baby to be born there before it was flooded to form Watts Bar Lake. He was a devoted husband to his wife, Linda Summers Chattin, for 57 years. Although they had no children of their own, he was a dedicated educator for 26 years who influenced the lives of many students. He was known for teaching more than what was contained in the textbook and encouraging students to see the bigger picture in every circumstance.

He also had a career in Security at the Watts Bar Nuclear Plant where he was a certified EMT/First Responder. He rose to the position of acting captain of the security unit before making a career change back into the classroom.

He earned a BA degree from Carson Newman College and during the summer worked at Camp Woodlee, the 4-H Camp he attended as a youngster. He was the life guard, swimming instructor and recreation leader there, among other responsibilities. He would eventually help form the Camp Woodlee Alumni, a group of former campers, who recently celebrated their 50th anniversary, carrying on traditions and sharing the Woodlee camping experience with several generations.

After college he had joined the United States Coast Guard, graduating 2nd in his boot camp class. He then served in the U. S. Coast Guard Reserve for 13 years, ending his career as a Petty Officer First Class. Danny rode thousands of miles on his various bicycles, often riding more than one per day. He exercised daily and remained healthy into his 74th year until a devastating accident ended his former life and sent him on a ten- year journey filled with challenges as well as good times. He was a faithful member of Yellow Creek Baptist Church from his youth. He served in various capacities but was Treasurer and Moderator of business meetings for years. He attended church even after his accident whenever he could, enjoying fellowship with the people he loved and joining them for church dinners whenever possible. Most of all, he loved and served the Lord.

He was predeceased in death by his father W. F. (Bill) Chattin, his mother Nelle Clack Chattin, his brother Glenn Chattin, and his beloved first sister-in-law and classmate, Helen Roddy Chattin. He is survived by his wife, Linda Summers, his brother Fred Chattin, sisters-in-law Joyce (Fred) and Aline (Glenn): nephews, grandnephews and nephews-in-law who will serve as pall bearers: nieces, grandnieces and nieces-in-law who are honorary pall bearers.

Funeral services were held on Monday, June 2, at 2:00 P.M. at Yellow Creek Baptist Church with Ben Sanders, Dr. Roger Rothwell, Rev. Michael Young, and Rev. Clyde Fitzgerald officiating. The body laid in state one hour before the service at the church. Interment followed in Ewing Cemetery. The family received friends on Sunday, June 1, from 2:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M. at Vaughn Funeral Home.

Flowers are always appreciated, but for those who would like to make a memorial donation to the E.K. Woodlee Memorial Youth Camp, you may send a check made out to "Camp Woodlee", attn Dan Strasser, PO Box 313, Columbia, TN 38402.

Thank you for being the kind and wonderful human being that you were.
I am filled with memories.
Words can‘t express what I am feeling right now. You have been one of my closest friends and we became family.
I am proud to call you my kindred spirit, my chosen dad.
You have been my trusted friend as I was yours- thanks for sharing, thanks for believing in me, thanks for showing me your home, that became my home as well.
Our kinship was special and I‘ll miss you forever.
I love you.
Andrea

I'm so sad to hear about Danny's passing. I have always thought of him as an integral fixture at Camp Woodlee and enjoyed the brief times we talked. In my mind, no one narrates square dancing like Danny. His voice is the soundtrack of some of the most fond memories that I have laughing, sweating and dancing with friends.

Linda and family, Danny was an amazing man. He was an encourager, dedicated teacher, husband, strong Christian, avid biker, and friend to many. His bright smile lit up any room in which he entered through the good times and the not so good times. Linda, you loving care made the difference in his life! Prayers and love,

I’ll never forget the lessons you taught us, Mr. Chattin. You encouraged each and every one of your students to do their best and to dig a little deeper in our pursuits of knowledge. You’ll forever be one of my favorite teachers and examples of how a good human being should be. May your spirit live on, sir.

He is someone I will never forget. A great teacher, just knew how to express and explain. He was a good friend for years. Worked with him at WBNP. Always smiling and just being himself. Great seeing him and Linda at the Alumni Banquet. Thrilled when he called me by name! She was always by his side. Great wife and caretaker. He will definitely be missed. May God Bless and comfort Linda and all Family

"To live in the hearts we leave behind is to live forever" - Carl Sagan
I can't think of a more accurate way to describe Mr. Chattin for so many of his students. I had him as my 8th grade history and homeroom teacher. He has always been my most favorite teacher because he truly cared about every student and it was obvious. He didn't care about the test scores, but it seemed like what he really wanted was to reach every single student and challenge them to do better for themselves. I went back to the school a few times after I graduated from there, just to check in on him and fill him in on my latest updates. He was always genuinely happy to listen. I will always remember his smile and laugh when our class would be up to our usual shenanigans. It was always so clear that he sincerely loved teaching, even when we were probably trying his patience. Mr. Chattin will truly live forever in the hearts of so many. May God wrap you all in His loving embrace and comfort you all in these difficult times.
