Raymond Kagels Obituary

Raymond Stuart Kagels, 70, of Narragansett, Rhode Island passed away on Sunday August 26, 2018 after a 4 year battle with Hepatic Cell Carcinoma. He was the beloved husband of Joyce Kagels (Covel) for 48 years. He leaves behind his children, Raymond S. Kagels, Jr and wife Amy (Pomeroy) of Douglas, MA ; and Scott A. Kagels and wife Kathryn (Carlisle) of Concord, MA; and four grandchildren; Emma, Sophie, Maxwell, and Madeleine.
He is survived by his siblings Robert Kagels and spouse Marilyn of West Hartford, CT; Linda Johnson (Kagels) and husband Mark of Groveland, FL; and Richard Kagels and spouse Malouh of Florida. He has been blessed to have many nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly.
Raymond was born in Buffalo, NY on February, 26, 1948, the son of Theodore A. and Mary Elizabeth Kagels (Kenyon). He was raised in Essex Junction, VT; Warwick, RI; and Northborough, MA. He graduated from Algonquin High School in 1966, and Brown University in 1971. He served in the United States Army Reserves during the Vietnam era and was honorably discharged.
After college, Raymond entered the insurance industry as a claims adjuster for Royal Insurance. He showed dedication to his profession by earning an advanced insurance designation, known as Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter (CPCU). He then moved into the specialized field of structured settlements at Galaher Settlements, and served the majority of his professional life in this capacity. He brokered annuities which allowed catastrophically injured people to receive funds necessary to care for them for a life time. He found this challenging and rewarding; and felt he was performing a great social good. Raymond finished his career at Preferred Mutual as a claims adjuster.
Raymond's love of Narragansett deepened over the last twenty years while he lived on his family property, Kenyon Farms. Spending his entire life as a steward of this property, he gained a deep admiration for this community. He became active in Narragansett by serving as Vice President of the Friends of Canonchet Farm, President of 2100, landlords organization, and one of the founding members and Vice President of the re-instituted Narragansett Historical Society. He ran for town council in 2016.
Raymond was a dedicated family man and Christian. He was actively involved in his children's, nieces', and nephews' lives. He served as a Scout Master in Troop 50 in Beverly, MA for his son Raymond Jr. Raymond also served on the Prudential Board; and as church moderator at the Second Congregational Church in Beverly, MA. He enjoyed watching his children and grand-children's sporting events, golfing, skiing, walking Narragansett Town Beach, and traveling for work and pleasure.
Raymond will be missed dearly by his friends and family. Those wishing to pay last respects may come to calling hours at Avery-Storti Funeral Home, 88 Columbia Street, Wakefield, RI 02879 at 6 - 8 pm on Friday, August 31, 2018. Dear Joyce, Ray jr. & Scott,

We are so saddened by the loss of your Husband and Father. Ray was also my Brother, a Step-Brother to my Wife and an Uncle to our Children. Ray will be missed but certainly not forgotten. I feel very fortunate that I was able to have a "heart-to-heart" talk with my Brother, about a month before he passed away. So, I always say: "If you have something good to tell someone, don't hesitate. Tell them right away!"

With love,

Dick, Malouh, Bryon & Natasha
