Very sorry to hear of Vanessa's passing. I can think back to my earliest memories and see myself playing games with her and my brothers in the basement of her home while our parents gathered upstairs filling the home with laughter. I remember when her dad passed, and then her mom, and in my young mind, wondering how Vanessa would fare all alone. My mother reassured me that she had "Betty Ann" to take care of her. That eased my mind, since after all, Betty Ann (as our babysitter) managed to take care of four of us. She was a constant in our life back then.

We saw Vanessa intermittently through the years, and that always made my mother happy. As we get older, those connections mean more and more. It hadn't been three weeks before Vanessa's passing that she and Liz visited for my mother's 90th birthday. It meant so much to her to have Vanessa and Liz make that drive just to share a birthday lunch with her. That is just their way...

I am sorry to have lost Vanessa at the young age of 67, but very grateful that she is part of the tapestry of my life, at its very foundation. She was only a few years older than I, but those few years were huge for children. Despite that, she made sure that I was included and her warnings of the "sand hill" and to avoid it, are burned into my memory.

To Liz, I'm so sorry for your loss... and it truly is a loss in its most literal sense. You were her caregiver at such a young age yourself and I marvel at that, and how accomplished Vanessa was as a college grad and software engineer. More importantly, the thoughtfulness and integrity that I remember from childhood was always there. And as an adult, she was your companion and friend. There are no words. May her memory be a blessing.
