In 1955, two little girls decided to enter the Roane County 4-H Club Bake Off in Kingston. Although both 5th graders were much younger than their counterparts in the biscuit baking contest, Wanda's biscuits won third place. However, given the large amount of baking powder I had mistakenly added to my biscuits and how long I left them in the oven, they were better suited for carpet bombing behind enemy lines. Wanda and I sat in the back of the bus driven by Uncle Earl Hendrickson- Wanda's uncle on her dad's side and my great-uncle on my mom's side. We talked and planned and dreamed as we rode the bus that day. Wanda wanted to get married when she grew up, have two children – a boy and a girl, and become a teacher. Why do I remember this day? This was the last time that Wanda and I would spend any real time together. Over the years when we would visit Tennessee, I would hear about Wanda from my grandparents and other relatives – high school graduation, organist at Pine Ridge, marriage, teaching school, children, and college graduation, but somehow because of our schedules, we never got together. Today, I find peace and comfort in knowing that Wanda accomplished all her dreams that she shared with me that day so many decades ago. As Wanda was passing from this life into the arms of Jesus, she was surrounded by her husband of almost 50 years, two children – a very successful son and daughter, and deeply loved by her four grandchildren. Wanda had a long teaching career, and was well respected not only in Roane County, but also in South Carolina, and in Texas. Rest in Peace my childhood friend.
