Barbara Hinchee Obituary

Barbara Hale Hinchee

April 4, 1938 - October 27, 2021

Barbara H. Hinchee, 83, of Roanoke, Va., went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, October 27, 2021.

Born on April 4, 1938, in Roanoke, Barbara grew up in Garden City and graduated from Jefferson High School in 1956. She was happily married to J.H. for 33 years until lung cancer took him in 1988.

As the secretary at Mount Pleasant Elementary School for over thirty years, Barbara developed many long-term friendships among the faculty and staff as well as the rest of the Mount Pleasant community.

She was a devoted member of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church where she attended faithfully with her church family.

Barbara was the widow of James Herbert (J.H.) Hinchee Jr. and was also preceded in death by her father, Roscoe Hale; mother, Uray Hale; and brother, Wayne Hale.

Our Mom felt very blessed to have such a dedicated and loving family and we felt very fortunate to have her unconditional love and devotion. She was known as Mamaw to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She leaves behind three daughters, Pam Gordon (Dennis), Donna Harber (Ken), and Tammy Cook (Brian); six grandchildren, Derick Vaden, Dustin Vaden (Stephanie), Adam Gordon (Leslie), Megan Holloway (Ryan), Tyler Cook, and Jamie Wilson (Josh); eight great-grandchildren, Evie, Olivia, and Pearl Gordon, Gabriel, Lachlan, and Everett Wilson, and Marshall and Channing Holloway; a special sister-in-law, Rowena Hale; along with many special friends and cousins.

The family would like to thank caregivers, Tina and Pam, for their wonderful help and support during this difficult time.

Funeral service will be conducted at 10 a.m. on Saturday, October 30, 2021, at Oakey's South Chapel. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 until 8 p.m. on Friday, October 29, 2021, at Oakey's South Chapel. Online condolences may be made at www.oakeys.com.

Sorry to read of your mother´s passing. Barbara and my wife Shirley were life long friends. Barbara and Shirley lived close to each other in Garden City. They would see which one could call the other first on Barbara´s birthday and our anniversary which were on the same day. I also have known Barbara since we were teenagers.
