Bethanyann Hollingsworth Obituary

Bethanyann Sisson (Beth) Hollingsworth, 72, died on Thursday, January 28, 2010, in Roanoke, Va., surrounded by her beloved family. She was a strong, vibrant, loving and immensely generous woman before suffering a stroke two weeks ago. Beth remained conscious for several days after the stroke, during which time she shared stories both poignant and funny with David Hollingsworth, her husband of 53 years, and her children and grandchildren. She expressed love and gratitude for her family and heard the same from them.
Beth was born on August 18, 1937, in Roanoke, Va., a daughter of Effie Dorcas Warren and Truman Alanmore Sisson. She graduated from Jefferson High School in 1955 and married David Hollingsworth in 1956. During David's Army service, they lived in Bad Nauheim, Germany, before returning to Roanoke in 1958.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Stephen Alanmore Sisson; and her beloved daughter, Jennifer Beth, who died at age 5 in 1968. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her son, David Samuel Hollingsworth Jr.; and daughter, Elizabeth Hope Hollingsworth, both of Roanoke; and by her daughter, Lauren Lee Holtz and her husband, Ira, of Barrington, R.I. She is also survived by grandsons, Garrett Parke and Gavin Miles Hollingsworth, of Roanoke; grandson, Bradley Russell Holtz, of Knoxville, Tenn.; and granddaughters, Jennifer Lee and Sally David Holtz, both of Barrington.
Beth was a gifted cook who loved feeding and playfully teasing her vigorous grandchildren. She valued deeply her camaraderie with the women in her weekly water aerobics class. She was a member of Raleigh Court Presbyterian Church where she was a volunteer and once sang in the choir. She was a volunteer for the Presbyterian Community Center and had served as a tutor and substitute secretary for Roanoke City Schools.

A visitation will be held on Monday, February 1, 2010, from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel. The funeral will be held 1 p.m. on Tuesday, February 2, 2010, at Raleigh Court Presbyterian Church, 1837 Grandin Road, Roanoke. Interment will follow in Evergreen Burial Park. A reception will follow in Fellowship Hall.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Presbyterian Community Center, 1228 Jamison Ave., Roanoke, Va. 24013.

I was a 1955 graduate of Jefferson High School along with Beth. We were in the choir, and I'll always remember her sweet voice. She sang "The Lord's Prayer" for senior assembly - I accompanied her. My condolences to her family and friends in Roanoke.

Sam, Hope and Lauren, this breaks my heart for you and your sweet Daddy. As usual, my Mommie had a better command of words than I do. She wrote, "May your hopes and hurts and loves and dreams build you a stronger personal world. All of us add to your tapestry. Some of the weave is smooth and some of the threads are rough. Together they create a better, stronger, more understanding you - filled with
the richness and quiet and joy of a gentle creative life." I wish for you smiles to go with your tears and wonderful memories to get you through this. Much love, the other Sam
