Betty Louise Sargent Black
February 14, 1930 - September 28, 2025
Betty Louise Sargent Black of Roanoke, Va., went home to join the Lord and be with her husband, Lewis, on Sunday, September 28, 2025.
She was born in Bluefield, Va., and raised on a family farm in Honaker, Va., where she was the valedictorian of her high school class before earning a bachelor's degree in teaching at the Women's Division of V.P.I. Radford. She became a teacher in rural Virginia and in Abingdon where she met her future husband, Lewis. Betty later worked as a homebound teacher for Roanoke County where she was instrumental in furthering her pupil's education and personal growth. She was active with the Roanoke Jaycees and the American Association of University Women (AAUW). Betty was an educator and mentor who enthusiastically volunteered her time and wisdom to guide and further other's capabilities. She was a stickler for proper grammar and an avid Anglophile who kept a stiff upper lip through life's trials and tribulations and bettered those around her.
Betty was a loving and nurturing wife, mother, grandmother, sister and aunt, and was a faithful member of Enon Baptist Church. She had a kind heart, sharp-witted sense of humor, and a love for the simple things in life, as well as life itself. She had a deep love for animals and nature and loved to read mystery novels involving animals.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis, who passed on September 12, 2017. Their anniversary was September 26th. He used to say he had his Valentine every day of the year. She is survived by her children, Sally Sizer, James Black (Aspen), and David Black; grandchildren, Sarah Sizer, Riley and Alice Black; and two fat very spoiled cats, Drew-Drew and Tabitha.
The family greatly appreciates the loving dedication of Betty's caregivers, Sandy, Traci, Dana, Porsha, and others.
A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 11, 2025, at Enon Baptist Church with a fellowship reception to follow. The family will receive visitors one hour prior to the service at the church.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Betty's memory to an animal charity. Online condolences may be shared with her family at
