Charles was my disseretation chair. Honestly, he changed my life and set me on the academic path. My wife & I canoed with him on the New River in his oversized canoe, Big Red. I visited with him often. He and Liz lived not far from my house in Blacksburg. I was fortunate to study at VPI during a time of great intellectual dominace in the Thomas Conner house for the Center.

Since I was a little kid, I have so much adored my beloved Uncle Charley. I remember being a flower girl for his wedding when I was 5, getting a tour of Washington DC when I was a teenager, and staying at his home for two weeks during a college break to help out with my younger cousins when Liz, his wife, had back surgery. I have many of his books proudly displayed on my bookshelf. Needless to say, I will miss the many political conversations with him. I wonder if he is watching over us and how he is reacting to all the resent political turmoil happening now. May God be with him. He is forever i my heart.

Charles was a brilliant professor and joyfully shared his love of learning with all. He was a kind and respected mentor, always ready to celebrate his students' accomplishments. He believed in speaking truth to power and his legacy will continue to guide those who pursue the life of the mind. My sincere condolences to his family.
