Charles Smith Obituary

Charles William (Bill) Smith, of Christiansburg, passed away on Monday morning, July 30, 2012. He was the son of Charles and Ollie Smith (both deceased), of Christiansburg. He also was preceded in death by a brother. Professor Smith taught Engineering at Virginia Tech for 44 years, and remained active in research there for another 10 years. He was an Alumni Distinguished Professor Emeritus and a member of the Academy of Engineering Excellence.
He was a lifetime resident of Christiansburg, and is preceded in death by an infant son, Steven William Smith; and his wife, Doris Burton Smith.
Mr. Smith is survived by his children, David B. Smith and wife, Connie Smith, of Christiansburg and Terry Smith Kelley, of Harrisonburg. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Meagan Kelley, Caitlin Kelley and Brittany Marcella Smith-Pryce; and his great-grandson, Austin Bishop. In addition, there are many special former students, colleagues and friends that were included in his extended family.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to either, Professor C. William and Doris Smith Scholarship at Virginia Tech Foundation, 902 Prices Fork Road, Suite 4500, Blacksburg, VA 24060, or St. Paul's United Methodist Church 220 West Main Street, Christiansburg, VA 24073.
The celebration of life for Bill will be at St. Paul's United Methodist Church at 10 a.m. on Saturday August 4, 2012, followed by a brief graveside ceremony in Sunset Cemetery in Christiansburg. The family will be available at the church to greet at 9 a.m. prior to the service.
The family would like to extend deep appreciation to all the wonderful friends that contributed to Bill's ongoing joy for life. A special thank you to the caring staff at Kroonje that provided comfort and care during Bill's last days.

Dear Terry, David and Brittany et al. Robert visited Bill a month ago and I spoke with him over the phone. We thought he was improving and are very shocked at his passing. Sice we live in NC now, Bob will be able to come Saturday but I can not.Please know we are with you and reminisce our many memorable visits with both Bill and Doris over the 40+ years.
