Clarence Mays Obituary

Clarence Condal Mays Jr.

November 1, 1939 - October 22, 2022

Clarence Condal Mays Jr., 82, of Roanoke, Virginia, passed away on Saturday, October 22, 2022.

He was born on November 1, 1939, in Grundy, Va., to the late Clarence and Maude Owens Mays. Condal graduated from Garden High School in 1957 and then attended King College before transferring to the University of Virginia, where he earned his undergraduate, masters, and eventually a doctorate degree in Spanish Education. During his time in college, he met the love of his life, Lynn Morgan.

After getting married, Condal and Lynn settled in Roanoke where he began his career as a Spanish professor at Virginia Western Community College. He eventually became Humanities Division Chairman, and late in his career, Condal was the Director of Cultural Events for the college.

He was most recently a member of Bonsack Baptist Church and held prior memberships at Raleigh Court Presbyterian and Covenant Presbyterian, where he taught Sunday School. Condal was a devoted husband, parent, and grandparent.

He looked forward each year to donning his wife's creative Halloween costumes. Additionally, Condal enjoyed golf and tennis, and was a lifelong, passionate University of Virginia sports fan. He was known to flip over backwards in his rocking chair during a good basketball game.

Condal is survived by his wife of 60 years, Lynn Morgan Mays; three children, Courtney Mays Kimball and husband, Paul, Todd Mays and wife, Sherri, and Jenny Mays DeLorenzo; two grandchildren, Clark Tutwiler and Reid Tutwiler; brother, James E. Mays and wife, Paulette; many loved nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the nurses and entire staff of The Glebe for their wonderful care of Condal.

Funeral Services will be held at 12 p.m. on Thursday, October 27, 2022, at Oakey's South Chapel in Roanoke, Va. Interment will follow at Sherwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Glebe Benevolent Fund, c/o The Glebe, 200 The Glebe Blvd., Daleville, VA 24083. Online condolences may be shared with the family at www.Oakeys.com.

I will always remember his great laugh and huge smile. He was a wonderful and kind uncle. His career was an inspiration to me and I´ve always been proud to call him my uncle. Praying for all who loved him particularly Lynn, kids, and our Poppy, his brother.
