Clarence Sutphin Obituary

Clarence Eugene "Gene" Sutphin

March 4, 1929 - September 27, 2024

Clarence Eugene "Gene" Sutphin, 95, of Troutville, VA, made his descent to Heaven to his Lord and Savior on Friday, September 27, 2024.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents, John and Mary Etta Sutphin of Laurel Fork; brothers, Paul Sutphin and Claude Sutphin; sister, Buelah Sutphin Turner; along with many lifelong friends and other family members, we know they are rejoicing in the light of Jesus.

Gene was a lifelong entrepreneur and businessman. In 1960, Gene along with his adoring wife, Bunny, opened Gene's Trading Post in Cloverdale, as well as the first flea market in the state of Virginia and many other shops in Roanoke, Hillsville and Troutville.

Gene taught his family that strength is found in compassion, that true power lies in generosity, and that the most important currency we have is our ability to care for one another.

Gene's life was a testament to what it means to live fully and generously. He was known to give to anyone in need, stranger or family.

While we mourn his loss, we also celebrate the incredible man he was-a man who, above all else, loved deeply, especially his Bernice.

Surviving are his children, Dennis E. Sutphin, Joe Sutphin, Brenda Shaw; grandchildren, Adam Sutphin, John "JD" Sutphin and wife, Samantha, and Victoria Sutphin; great-grandchildren, Cash Sutphin, Gwen Sutphin, Dean Sutphin, Mia Masarik, Pearl Dudding; sister-in-law, Betty Lou and husband, Davis; sister-in-law, Rhonda and husband, Larry; and many loved nieces and nephews.

Gene's grandson and caregiver, JD, would like to personally thank his brother, Adam, wife, Samantha; sister, Victoria; as well as the staff of Carilion, Troutville Rescue Squad, Good Samaritan Hospice, Sammy and Linda Turner, Tracy St. Claire, Melanie Rigney and the countless friends and family who gave our Granddaddy compassion, love and respect.

The family will receive friends from 9 to 10 a.m. at Oakey's North Chapel on Tuesday, October 1, 2024, followed by funeral services there. The Pastor Heath Rickmond will officiate. Interment will be in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. Condolences may be shared with his family by visiting www.Oakeys.com.

JD and family I was so sad to hear of your granddaddy's passing. I met him many times, he built a lot of our furniture for us and I always loved going to his antique shops. He was such a gem of a person, so kind and giving. I know your heart is broken but he is definitely with your sweet angel grandmother celebrating today! Prayers, love and hugs to you and your family.
