Daniel Monroe Durham

Daniel Monroe Durham left his earthly home on Thursday, November 11, 2021 while his loving wife, Diane, held his hand.

Dan was born in Buena Vista, Va. to the late Broadus Francis and Thelma Miller Durham. He attended Parry McCluer High School and joined the United States Air Force at age 18. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 32 years, serving as window clerk at the Roanoke Main Office and was Postmaster at Cloverdale, and retired as Postmaster at Union Hall in 1999.

Dan was a dedicated volunteer with the Roanoke Postal Employees Federal Credit Union for many years. He served in many capacities including the Loan Committee, Board of Directors, and served as President of the credit union. He was proud to have been involved in the selection of the late Larry Booth as credit union manager.

Dan enjoyed music of all kinds—especially Elvis. He enjoyed playing guitar and singing with his young children, camping, youth sports activities, league bowling, horseshoes, golfing with Diane and friends at Willow Creek, and the Roanoke Valley Senior Golf Tour. He always cheered on the Washington Redskins, Va. Tech football, and UVA basketball. He enjoyed flowers, landscaping, and decorating for Christmas which included a pretty impressive outdoor light display.

Survivors include his devoted wife of nearly 38 years, Diane, and his children, Jeff (Rebecca) Durham, Mike (Judy) Durham, Diana (Ken) Waldron, Sondra (Rob) James, and Gloria (Joel) Ruf, along with nine grandchildren, Bethany and Leah, Garrett, Bradford, and Sydney, Dylan and Mandy, Nikki and Kyle. Dan was excited about the upcoming birth of his great-grandson, Ace Monroe. Also, he leaves behind his brother, Eugene Durham, and sister, Betty (Thurman) Clark, nieces and nephews, lifelong friend, Bob Tomlin, and his beloved Boston Terrier, Dolli.

Special thanks to family and friends for visits, calls, texts, thoughts and prayers during his recent hospitalization. And special appreciation goes to Dr. Gurlal Baidwan and Nurses Bella and Barbara on 12 west, Nurse Ivy in the Pulmonary ICU, and Nurse Allyson in Palliative Care at Carilion RMH.

Funeral services will be conducted from Flora Funeral Chapel at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, November 16, 2021 with Minister Steve Pasley officiating. Interment will follow in Franklin Memorial Park. His family will receive friends beginning at 12:30 p.m. prior to the service on Tuesday at Flora Funeral Service and Cremation Center, Rocky Mount.
