Merrillyn Clark Calhoun of Bowling Green, Kentucky passed away Sunday February 15, 2026. She was the daughter of the late W. Merrill Clark and Catherine S. Clark and stepdaughter of Dorothy C. Clark.

She was a graduate of George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia and received her master's degree at the University of Virgina in Charlottesville, Virginia. She also attended Western Kentucky University.

Mrs. Calhoun was both a classroom teacher and a teacher for the gifted and talented children in The Fairfax County Public Schools of Northern Virginia. She acted as the coordinator for gifted programs in an administrative office and served on a board for gifted programs in Fairfax County. Also, Mrs. Calhoun worked with the county mathematics specialists to develop teacher training programs for elementary teachers. She was involved in training sessions for educators on the various learning styles of children and adults in both formal and informal settings.

In 1990, Mrs. Calhoun joined her husband, Gilbert T. Calhoun, in The Netherlands where he assumed the position as Director of Principal Planning and Coordination for NATO's SHAPE Technical Centre in The Hague, The Netherlands.

In 1994, the Calhoun's returned to the U.S. where they built their home on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina and stayed until they moved to Bowling Green in mid-2005. However, in December 2001, Mr. Calhoun as asked to come back to work for NATO for a six-month period. Mrs. Calhoun joined him in Holland and they returned to South Carolina in July 2002.

Mrs. Calhoun belonged to a number of professional organizations. They are Phi Delta Kappa, Fairfax County Education Association, and the Virginia Education Association. In addition, she belonged to the PEO of Bowling Green, Kentucky as well as the County Club of Hilton Head, South Carolina and the Country Club of Bowling Green, Kentucky.

She is survived by her husband, Gilbert T. Calhoun; a daughter, Catherine A. Calhoun; a son, David C. Calhoun and grandchildren, Marissa Brunner, Rachel Berganin and Tyler Rice, and a sister-in-law Lindsey Smith.

Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at a later date. The family has suggested that in lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to The Alzheimer's Association or The First Presbyterian Church in Bowling Green.

Arrangements have been entrusted to J.C. Kirby & Son Lovers Lane Chapel.
