Doreen H. Fishwick of Roanoke, Virginia, born on May 17, 1926, died peacefully on Sunday, May 5, 2024. Mrs. Fishwick was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 21 years, John P. Fishwick; her husband, the Reverend Howard Hamilton; her daughter, Patricia Hamilton; and her stepdaughter, Palmer Fishwick Posvar.
She is survived by her children, David Hamilton (Patricia), John P. Fishwick Jr. (Jeanne), and Ellen Fishwick Martin (Guy); son-in-law, Wes Posvar; and her sister and brother-in-law, Joan and Doug Ellis. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Guy Martin IV (Rachel), John Martin (Adam Grandt), Wesley Posvar, Winston Posvar (Jackie), Richard Fishwick, and Jack Fishwick; two great-grandsons; and a beloved niece and nephew.
A native of Canada, Doreen was honored to become a United States citizen in July of 1990. After a career in hotel management in New York and Philadelphia, she moved to Roanoke in 1986 to be the general manager of The Hotel Roanoke. She retired from that position in November of 1989.
She was a long-time member of St John's Episcopal Church, a supporter of the Roanoke Symphony, and Opera Roanoke. Through her marriage, she acquired a devout affection for Roanoke College. In May of 2021, she was awarded an honorary doctorate by the College Board of Trustees. Until her death, she loved music, tennis, and her family.
For the past 17 years, she was a resident of Brandon Oaks Retirement Living. The family is extremely grateful for the care and attention she received from the staff in Independent Living, Assisted Living and at the John P Fishwick Rehabilitation Center.
A private interment will be followed by a funeral service at St. John's Episcopal Church on Thursday, May 9, 2024, at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial gifts be made to the John P Fishwick Rehabilitation Center at Brandon Oaks. I remember Mrs. Fishwick as being feisty but yet loving. She would always thank me for opening items on her food tray and end it by saying you are an angel for helping. God has truly gained a angel. My condolences and prayers to her family and friends.
