Ed Carbaugh Obituary

Carl Edward "Ed" Carbaugh passed away unexpectedly on June 26, 2025, at the age of 69. He is survived by his wife, Denise; his daughter, JoBeth and her husband Jason; his son, George; and his granddaughter Merrily. He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Betty Carbaugh, and his infant sister, Joyce Ellen.

Longtime residents of Chesapeake, Ed and Denise moved to Raleigh, NC, earlier this year to be closer to family. This new chapter has been full of hope and happiness, though heartbreakingly short for him. His family grieves his loss, but is grateful Ed was spared the difficult final stages of multiple sclerosis, a condition he lived with for many years.

Professionally, Ed was a fourth-generation railroader who spent over four decades with Norfolk Southern Railway, a career that took him across the eastern US. A man of deep faith and service, Ed was active for decades at Great Bridge UMC in Chesapeake, serving in leadership, United Methodist Men, Boy Scout Troop 48, and alongside his wife in the Good News Sunday School class. In recent years, he found fellowship at Living Sacrifice Church in Chesapeake and Apostles Raleigh. He also volunteered with FaithWorks Coalition, NEST, and CAST. A proud Virginia Tech Hokie and ZBT fraternity brother, Ed cherished the friendships he made there and later through Bible studies, discussion groups, and the Civil War Round Table.

Graveside service will be held at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens (5731 Airport Rd) on Saturday, October 11 at 11 a.m.

I worked with Ed at Norfolk Southern. Known him for many years. Because of the man Ed was the family already knows this, simply said "Ed was a good man!" As my mother used to say "good people ". Sorry for your loss but rejoice knowing he is with his savior. Rocky Perkins

Ed as a childhood cousin provided many memories. Later his kindness in passing on a small .22 rifle that was our Grandfathers provided a chance for me to train my own Grandson.
