Edgar Fain Obituary

Edgar Lee Fain, 64, of Blacksburg, Va., died on Friday, October 17, 2008, at his home. He was born in Montgomery County, Va., on March 4, 1944, to the late Arnold Richard and Susan Sheppard Fain. Ed was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, son, brother and friend. His quiet, friendly, compassionate manner was loved and respected by all. His spirit in the face of all of his challenges was inspirational. He was a faithful and Christian man who never forgot to thank God for his blessings.
He was a local businessman, auto mechanic, and truck driver from the late 60's until the early 80's when a debilitating disease caused him to have to retire from work but not from life. He was always a Blacksburg High School Indian/Bruin fan as well as loving those Hokies and auto racing.
The family will be eternally grateful for the care and so many kindnesses he received from the entire medical profession in our community. There are way too many to mention them all, but special thanks to Dr. Conatser, his staff and that exceptional Vickie for their ongoing care for over 30 years. The Critical Care staff at Carilion New River Valley Medical Center who pulled him through crisis more than once. The Respiratory Care team at the hospital and Advanced Home Care (formally Carilion) whose Respiratory Therapists were always there for him no matter what and made it so he was ready to face each day.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Bungard Fain, of Blacksburg; son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Tracy Fain, of Charlottesville; two granddaughters: Mackenzie and Madison Fain, of Charlottesville; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Arnold Manuel and Linda Fain, of Blacksburg, John C. and Carlene Fain, of Radford, and Fred D. and Brenda Fain, of Blacksburg; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Elizabeth and Robert Smith, of Christiansburg, and Patsy and Paul SorreII, of Richmond; sister-in-law, Elizabeth Dixon, of Virginia Beach; two brothersin-law, Clif Bungard and wife, Noni, of Blacksburg, and Chris Holcomb and wife, Shelley, of Chesapeake. He leaves behind many wonderful nieces and nephews.
He donated his remains to the Virginia Anatomical Program. Memorial services will be conducted 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 25, 2008, in the Blacksburg Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Alex Evans and the Rev. Susan Verbrugge officiating. The family will receive friends at a reception immediately following the service at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Ed's name to Muscular Dystrophy Association, 4502 Starkey Road, S.W., Suite 107, Roanoke, Va. 24018. Arrangements by McCoy Funeral Home, 150 Country Club Drive, S.W., Blacksburg, Va.

Mary and family,
In the midst of your pain and grief at the farewell for now to your soul mate, I rejoice with you that it is a temporary separation. Thanks be to God that he is at home with the Lord and when he took his last breath here, he took his next one in Heaven. I will miss seeing him and pray God's peace "that passes all understanding" for you in the days ahead. May wonderful, warm, laughter filled memories give you joy.
