Ed, Heidi & John,

I am so saddened to have recieved the tragic news of the death of your son Nelson. Although I never met your son, I can tell you based on Ed's loving stories of Nelson and how proudly he spoke of him (as well as John) that he must have been one great kid. I can't imagine the loss you all must feel. It is truly unbelievable that a bright shining light like Nelson is no longer elumninating at least here physically but what a gift to have had him for those precious 18 years.

I am not sure what anyone can say to make you feel better but hopefully with some time and the friends and family that surround and support you it will get somewhat easier.

I made the comment to Ed that now you have an Angel watching over you and I know everyone says cliche things like that but I do believe it to be true.

Please know that my thoughts are with you all.

Mr. and Mrs. James,
While I didn't know Nelson very well, the amount of support I have seen and heard from the Lynchburg and Glass community truly shows how many lives your son touched. He was in my driver's ed class and we could always rely on Nelson to make such a boring class the most eventful of the day. He truly was an amazing person and everyone could see that no matter how well you knew him.

John,
Know that you have an entire support system every time you walk into Glass. They are all your brothers and sisters and they are always going to be there for you.

To the entire James family,
Keep a smile on your face and know that Nelson is smiling right back at you. Your entire family is in my thoughts everyday.

Ed:

I was informed earlier today of the tragic loss of your son. My heart breaks for you and your family. Seven years ago my wife and I lost an infant son - it was our focus on his older sister and the outpouring of support from family and friends that pulled us through. You're in my thoughts and prayers during this most difficult of times.

Dear James family,

I do so wish I had known your son. Bucky, Bullet, BB, and the rest of the James gang were such a big part of my life in high school and afterwards, even to this day.

This much I do know. From everything written and said about Nelson, he had that zest for life and laughter that runs throughout the James family. It is such a tragedy to lose a child as our family knows first hand. And even though the pain never goes away, please know that you will remember the happy times and love you shared with him and you will smile again. And above all, please rely on friends who want to help. Surround yourself with love and compassion from all of those who shared his life with you.

The whole James family is in my heart and prayers.

My daughter, Cameron, attends VES and said the entire community was in shock. What an outstanding young man you raised to touch so many lives at such a young age. Use that as comfort if you can. I know that the days, months and years ahead will be full of sadness, tears as well as good memories and smiles. There is nothing anyone can say that will help except that if I learned one thing when death hit our family, holding on to the ones closest to you is what gets you through. Let others help you too and speak to his friends often. They will give you strength. May God bless you.

Dear Mr. and Mrs. James and Family:

On behalf of the Culver Summer Schools and Camps administration, students and staff, I want to tell you how sorry we were to learn of Nelson's accident and death. Please know that you are all in our thoughts and prayers at this time of sorrow and loss.

I am so pleased that Nelson graduated from the Naval School this past summer, earned his Gold Tuxis medal and that his counselor thought so highly of him as a role model for others. I am also pleased that Nelson received his certificate from the Department of the Navy indicating his participation in the Culver Summer Naval School of Culver Military Academy, an Honor Naval School.

It is my hope that Nelson enjoyed his experience at Culver and that his summers as a Naval Midshipman brought joy and satisfaction to both Nelson and to you.

Sincerely,
Anthony T. Mayfield

It was an honor and a privilege for myself and the golf team at Franklin County to know and compete with Nelson these past few years. He conducted himself as a gentleman, competed fairly and fiercely, and was an example to our district's young golfers as to what being a high school athlete should be all about. Our deepest sympathies extend to both the family and the E.C. Glass Golf Team. God bless you all in this time of sorrow.
