Elizabeth Edwards Obituary
Elizabeth Estelle Wolfe Edwards, of Mount Pleasant, S.C., and formerly a long time resident of Roanoke, Va., passed away on Wednesday, April 14, 2010. She was born in Roanoke, Va., on December 20, 1913, the oldest of three children born to Clara Duval Engleby and Alfred Lewis Wolfe Jr. of Roanoke, Va. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of 50 years, Harvey Greenwood (Greenie) Edwards; a brother, Alfred Lewis Wolfe III, M.D.; and a sister, Margaret Duval Wolfe Kent. She is survived by her three sons, Robert Greenwood Edwards and his wife, Lunette, of Richmond, Va., William Milnes Edwards and his wife, Lisa, of Edisto Island, S.C., and James Randolph Edwards and his wife, Melinda, of Atlanta, Ga. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, Russ and Drew Edwards, Lisa Thomas, Katherine Sherrod, Will Edwards, Kelly Blandford, and Jay and Brandon Edwards; three stepgrandchildren, Josephine, Christine and Elizabeth Irvin. She was the proud great-grandmother of William and James Edwards, Maggie and Alex Edwards, Elliot and Rob Thomas, Kate and Charlotte Sherrod, and Olivia Estelle Blandford; as well as numerous nieces and nephews and their children. She grew up in New York State and attended high school in New York City and Ridgewood, N.J. After graduation from Ridgewood High School in 1932, she attended Randolph Macon Women's College in Lynchburg, Va., where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1936. She worked briefly for Chase Manhattan Bank in New York City. She married in 1937 and relocated to Roanoke. After her children were grown she worked in her brother's medical practice as an office manager. She was a past president of the Magic City Garden Club and a longtime member of Christ Lutheran Church in Roanoke. She was an avid bridge player, playing in two groups until 2008 and loved solving cross word puzzles. Funeral services will be conducted 10 a.m. on Monday, April 19, 2010, by F. Tupper Garden at the Raleigh Court Presbyterian Church, 1837 Grandin Road and followed by interment in Evergreen Cemetery. Arrangements by Oakey's Roanoke Chapel, 540-982-2100.
