George Warren Robinson
September 17, 2022
George W. Robinson, 95, formerly of Roanoke County, Virginia, passed away at Radford Health & Rehab on Saturday, September 17, 2022.
He was born at home in Salem, Va. in 1927, to the late John Sigsbee Robinson and Amy Johnston Parson Robinson. Other than a year in the United States Navy serving as a gunner's mate aboard the USS Cross (DE-448) in the Pacific at the end of World War II, and a few years working in Hagerstown, Md., he lived and worked in the Roanoke-Salem area most of his life.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife of 66 years, Ruth Conrad Robinson; an infant daughter, Susan Kaye; siblings, Edith Wade, Audrey Reed, Andrew Robinson, Dorothy Robertson, and Russell "Buddy" Robinson; father and mother-in-law, Edgar P. Conrad and Mabel Brumfield Conrad Robinson (yes, his father married his wife's mother after both lost spouses); and brothers and sisters-in-law, Frank Conrad, Arlene Averett, Donald Conrad and Marie Schrader.
He is survived by his son, Barry B. Robinson (Jeanette) of Christiansburg; granddaughter, Crystal Tyzinski (Cory) of Kannapolis, NC; grandson, Vince Robinson (fiancée, Tashina Davis) of New Castle; step grandson, Travis Grubb (Erika) of Blacksburg; great-grandkids, Ella and Alex Tyzinski; step great-grandson, Lucas; sister, Martha Jane Milburn of Hawaii; sister-in-law, Sue Conrad of Savannah, GA; brothers-in-law, Warren "Robbie" Robertson of Salem, and Ben Averett (Sharon) of Marietta, GA; along with numerous nephews and nieces in several states.
He was part of the Greatest Generation, so to help support his family at age 10 he began carrying the Roanoke Times in Salem. Then at age 15 he began full-time work as a mechanic, then enlisted in the Navy at 17, came back and picked up where he left off and managed two service stations (Sinclair & Texaco) in Salem. He then became a certified BEAR Alignment Specialist and began working for Roanoke Auto Spring Works and at their Hagerstown, Md. branch until the late 1960s when he made his last work move to Wilson Trucking Company's Roanoke Terminal, ultimately retiring as Service Manager in 1995. Even after retirement he bagged groceries at Kroger for a short time, but his main focus was assisting Mom as a 25-year volunteer at Richfield (during and after her mother's passing) and caring for Mom daily until her passing in 2019. He was always helping someone else, fixing or inventing something at home, and always doing his best at whatever task was at hand.
The family would like to express special thanks to the Carilion Clinic Hospice NRV team, especially Becky Hignutt, RN; Pollyanne South, SW; and Kelly, Music Therapist. Also, a sincere thank you to Janet Brennend, NRV Agency on Aging Ombudsman for a year's assistance helping us deal with his care issues. His private caregiver, Eva Treece, was wonderful and he looked forward to every day she helped him. Special thanks to Diane Blevins, CNA and Thelma Hogge, his last tablemate, who both gave him the loving care and comfort to his family knowing someone was watching out for him. Last but not least, much appreciation to his Mount Pleasant community neighbors, especially Lynn Cochran, John Hardy and Jerry Alls – you guys were a huge help with Dad's transition to the NRV; plus, Hope Patsel, Winky McCann, and Denise Clark Gray for the calls, cards and texts. And there are many others too numerous to name here, but you are greatly appreciated.
Visitation will be held from 6 until 8 p.m. on Thursday, September 22, 2022, at Oakey's Vinton Chapel.
