George Wickham, 86, from Roanoke, passed away peacefully in Brooksville, Florida on Wednesday, April 16, 2025. George was born on January 1, 1939, the second of six children to Everett Wickham and Edith Cooper.
George proudly served in the U.S. Navy, primarily aboard the USS Eaton, a Fletcher-class destroyer. After honorable discharge, George made a career as a long-distance truck driver, logging more than 3 million miles over 30 years behind the wheel. George was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved traveling, having visited all 50 states. The highlight of George's life was undoubtedly his wife of 66 years, Maybelle, whom he loved immensely and affectionately referred to as "Sally Mae." George was a devoted husband and provider, a loving father and grandfather, and faithful brother, cousin, uncle and friend to so many that were fortunate to have known him.
"George and Maybelle"as everyone has known them since they were teenagerswere truly inseparable. They were each other's livestheir whole lives, and they are reunited and together again, after Maybelle's passing earlier this year.
George is survived by daughters Deborah Wright (Anthony) and Vicki Minks; grandchildren Thomas Wickham, Kevin and Ashley Deane, Robert Wickham, Devin and Elise (Baldacci) Deane and many great grandchildren; sisters Sue Huffman and Mae and Alton Caudill; sister-in-law Deborah Wickham and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, at Oakey's North Chapel (Peters Creek Road). Funeral services will be conducted at Old Dominion Memorial Gardens Mausoleum on Thursday, April 24, 2025, at 11 a.m., with Pastor T.G. Ayers officiating.
