Henrietta Dunnigan Obituary

Henrietta Terry Dunnigan, 86, born July 30, 1920-August 19, 2006. The family of Henrietta is saddened to announce the passing of our beloved mother and yet we are comforted by our belief that she is eternally secure in our Lord's embrace. She is predeceased by her husband, Edward Joseph Dunnigan, Sr., the love of her life for 35 years; a brother, Homer E. Terry, Jr.; a sister, Katherine Terry Slusher. Henrietta is a graduate of the Medical College of Virginia's School of Nursing, Class of 1944 and served during WWII as a U.S. Army Nurse in the South Pacific Theater of Operations and throughout her life gently touched and enriched the lives of so many people as a nurse and a friend. Surviving are Henrietta's three children, Edward Joseph Dunnigan, Jr. and his wife Linda of Manteo, N.C., Terry Sue Dunnigan Steele of Va. Beach, Va., and Thomas Michael Dunnigan and his wife, Liles of Raleigh, N.C.; a brother, George Terry and his wife, Joanne of Roanoke , Va., and a sister-in-law, Jimmi Terry of Reidsville, N.C.; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild and many dear friends. The time and date for a memorial service will be announced. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial contributions be made to a charity of your choice or honor Henrietta's memory with a simple act of kindness for someone less fortunate. Gone is another of the greatest generation.

My prayers and heartfelt love goes to the Dunnigan and Steele families. We are so blessed that Henrietta touched our lives and that my girls had an opportunity to love her. She taught them many things that they will take through their journey of life. Please know how much I admire your strength, Terry, and that all my prayers are with the entire family. God Bless and keep Henrietta's strong faith!

Henrietta was truly a special person. She meant so much to my mother and father especially during their time together at Greystone. She was always kind, generous and full of positive thoughts for all around her. But, oh what a ball of energy she was! Always on the go and always preparing for the next project-usually a gift for a friend. She dearly loved her family and you are all that much better for her presence in your life. Thank you, Henrietta.

I was a neighbor and friend of your mother in Greystone, when we first moved in. Although I left Richmond years ago, I have thought of her often. She was such a gracious, kind person. I have fond memories of visiting with her. A mutual acquaintance informed me of her death. My sympathy is with you.

You never know how, when or why God places people and events before us - however - he always seems to know what needs to be done. I am quite certain that Henrietta is beaming full of pride at her wonderful family. You are all a wonderful legacy to your mother's memory. I knew Henrietta only a short time but felt I had known her all my life. I loved her dearly. May the families' memories be wonderful and plentiful, and may you be healed by time and God's gentle touch.

Fondly, Page Bourgeois
