Henry Gregory Obituary

April 3, 1921 December 22, 2008 Henry D. (Hank) Gregory III, of Roanoke, Va., retired GE engineer and philanthropist, Presbyterian elder and wit, died on Monday, December 22, 2008. As he might have put it, "There's now one less of-us young folks around than there used to be."
Born in Denver, Colo., to Henry Jr. and Marion Hawkins Gregory, and educated in Denver public schools, he graduated in electrical engineering from the University of Colorado in 1942. In that same year, he married Lorraine Bixby, who predeceased him in 2001, and began in Schenectady, N.Y., his 42 year career with General Electric. There the couple's three children were born. In 1956, the family moved to Roanoke with GE, from which Mr. Gregory retired in 1984. In 2005, he married Imogene Dean, shared joy and love and support with her until he died, and embraced her children as his own.
Mr. Gregory was a leader and supporter of First Presbyterian Church, Treasurer of the Roanoke County Republican Party, a member of the GE Elfun Society; and delivered Meals on Wheels, his final time only days before his death. Hank Gregory received each day as a gift, and gratefully gave himself and his treasure to support his church and other agencies he saw to be serving his God's holy and loving purposes.
He is survived, and his memory is cherished, by his widow, Imogene; and her children, Nancy, Lawrence and Mary Beth; and by his children, grandchildren; and great-grandchildren, son, Henry D. IV (Greg) and Bobi, and their sons, H.D.V (Quint), Elijah and Asa, and grandchildren, Kimberly, H.D.VI (Shay), and Noah; Jack, Kate and Emory; daughter, Lorinda (Rindy) and Sam, and their sons, Sam III, David Scott, Chuck and Greg, and their grandchildren, Meggan and Gretchen; Emily and Samantha; Harrison, Ian and Gillian; Sara and Dylan; son, Scott and Kaye, and their children, Alicia and Stewart, and their granddaughter, Abigail. He is also survived by his cousins, Virginia Hawkins and Donald Hawkins.
The family wishes to express its deep gratitude to the Roanoke Memorial Hospital Neurotrauma ICU and to Chaplain Lisa Meyer, for their excellent practice of the healing arts, and their even better compassion as human beings.
The Rev. Bob Smith will lead a memorial service in the sanctuary of First Presbyterian Church 3 p.m. on Sunday, January 4, 2009. An informal reception will follow in the Fellowship Hall. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to LOA, designate Meals on Wheels in memory of Hank Gregory, P.O. Box 14205, Roanoke, Va. 24038-4205 or the First Presbyterian Church Capital Building Campaign, 2101 S. Jefferson St., Roanoke, Va. 24014.

Dear Rindy, Greg and Scott,

Susan and I are saddened at the passing of your Dad. As one of the "original GE and Cave Spring High families" from 1956, we have felt very close to your family. At GE Susan and I always saw Hank as a caring and professional gentleman and a true role model. In our high school days we enjoyed times at your home and appreciated your Dad's fun loving hospitality.

You were truly blessed to have him as your Dad, and we were blessed to know him as a friend and business colleague.

Imogine, it was a pleasure to meet you and we feel your loss.

We send our deepest sympathies to you and your families.

With love,

Ned and Susan

To the family of my long time GE friend, my heart is heavy with sadness for your loss ..... the loss for so many others. I had the wonderful pleasure of working with Hank in Gas Turbine Engineering from 1983 until his retirement. We always had a good time and he always wore a smile on his face and had funny things to say. I had the pleasure of meeting Lori and also Imogene. Classy women for a classy man. What a dear, sweet man Hank was and I am so honored to have had him as a part of my life. I will miss seeing him at Xmas basket packing, but he will never be forgotten. I will keep each of you in my thoughts and prayers.
God Bless, Ann Peters Dyer

Hank was a true gentlemen. His smile lit up a room. The last thing he said to me was "I'm glad my wife doesn't mind me kissing the pretty ladies"! Imogene, Greg, Rindy, Scott and families, my thought and prayers are with you and remember the good times. God Bless you during this most difficult time.

Rindy, Scott, Imogene and all the Roanoke family...

It was good to see all of your faces in Roanoke recently. Grandaddy had a way of bringing us together and I believe he has certainly done so now and will continue to do so.

May God be with you all and we will see you in the New Year.

With Love,
Asa

I had the pleasure to work with Hank from 1970 thru his retirement. I've never met a more giving, caring individual in the business world than Hank. What I learned from my association with him served me extremely well in my own career with GE. Hank, you will be missed, but rest assured your good deeds have made an impact on a great many of us.

As we mourn Hank's departure, heaven rejoices at his entry. A true man of faith, Hank is a wonderful example of how we Christian men ought to be. I am blessed to have known him. Blessings to you, Imogene, and all your family.

It would be tempting to try to enumerate the many fine qualities and good deeds that Hank has demonstrated and contributed to his friends, his family and the general community, but it is easier to sum up his impact in one word.

In the Judaic culture an exemplary, truly honorable man who serves as a positive role model to his peers is described as a "mensch."

Henry DuVal Gregory, III, was a mensch.

He will be missed.
