James Bishop Obituary

James Ray Bishop, 84, of Roanoke, passed away Wednesday, August 6, 2008, in a local hospital. He was preceded in death by his parents, George E. and Dora Epperly Bishop; sisters, Helen Hastings and Gertrude Barlow; wife, Agnes Burton Bishop; son, David Raymond Bishop; and a daughter, Ann Kirwin. Mr. Bishop retired from Roanoke Iron and Bridge Works. He served during World War II with the Marines in the South Pacific where he was awarded the Purple Heart. Surviving are his children, James Robert Bishop and wife, Katherine, of Roanoke, Linda Lee Marshall and husband, Donnie, of Salem, and Terri Jo Bishop, of Roanoke; grandchildren, Davian Bishop, Heather Dowdy, Eli Bishop, Jessica Sweet and husband, Cary, Gabriel Bishop, Kimberly Bishop, Sam Marshall, and Monica Summa; and two greatgrandchildren. The family wishes to express a special thanks to the staff of the Oaks at Richfield and the staff at the Veterans Care Center for their exceptional care and many acts of kindness. A memorial service will be conducted 10 a.m. Saturday, August 9, 2008, at Simpson Funeral Home, 5160 Peters Creek Road. The family will receive friends following the service. Dear Family,
Dad was a great man. He had some hard edges in his earlier days but in his final years, at every opportunity he had, he would tell us that he loved us and in my heart I know that he really meant it. And in the scheme of things isn't this all that matters?
