Joan Devlin Obituary
September 24, 1942 - December 24, 2025
Joan Marie Devlin, 83, of Roanoke, Va., left her family and friends who love her and went home to her loving Father on Wednesday, December 24, 2025.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Cornelius and Eileen Duggan; her husband, William Daniel Devlin; her brother, John Duggan; and her son-in-law, Darren Yates.
Joan is survived by her five children and their spouses, Mary Joan and Daniel LaFranca, Dawn and John Merrill, William and Kelly Devlin, Michelle and Micheal Ryan, Neal and Stacy Devlin as well as 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Growing up as an Irish American on the upper west side of Manhattan, Joan loved spending time with her friends on the streets of New York and in Central Park, in 1960 Joan began nursing school at Bellevue where she became a Registered Nurse. She then began her career in nursing and spent the rest of her life doing what she loved, caring for people and helping others.
In 1963, Joan met the love of her life, William Daniel Devlin, with whom she was married for 49 years (Bill passed away January 7, 2013). Joan and Bill spent their lives helping others and volunteering for many catholic organizations. She specifically spent her time helping with Religion and People Group (RAP), Birthright International, and Marriage Encounters. Joan was a Catechist and a Eucharistic Minister; she volunteered at Food Pantry of Botetourt and numerous blood drives. Joan also taught English as a second language where she met and welcomed into our family, Nimat Mahdi.
The family wishes to thank Our Lady of the Valley and all the amazing staff who cared for Joan throughout her time there.
Joan's life will be celebrated on Saturday, January 3, 2026, at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Nazareth Catholic Church, Roanoke, Va. In lieu of flowers, the family requests in Joan's memory please donate either to the Food Bank of Botetourt or your local food bank. Condolences may be shared at www.Oakeys.com.
