John Kimmel Allman Jr.
February 22, 1943 - July 24, 2024
John Kimmel Allman Jr., 81, left for his eternal home in Heaven on Wednesday, July 24, 2024. He was met there by his parents, John and Mary Allman; maternal grandparents, William and Emma Lester; paternal grandparents, Guy and Blanche Allman; aunt and uncle, Mildred and Joe Krause; uncle, Clay Allman; and cousins, Carol Dunbar and Nancy Conroy. Also, parents-in-law, Ben and Josephine Fulton; brothers-in-law, Gary Fulton and Richard Looney; and many fury friends.
John is survived by his wife of nearly 56 years, Darla Fulton Allman; his daughters and sons-in-law, Stephanie and Daniel Guthrie, Shannon and Kris Stinson; granddaughter, Emma Wyndsor Stinson; and grandson, Carter Grayson Guthrie. Also surviving are his sister-in-law and her husband, Beth and Dennis Goodman; sister-in-law, Carol Fulton; nephews, Wesley and Gavin Fulton; niece, Amy Looney; cousin, Peter Allman; and his precious Shih Tzu, Molly Theresa, as well as other friends and relatives.
John was a product of the Roanoke City Public Schools, having attended Jamison Elementary, Stonewall Jackson Junior High, and a proud graduate of Jefferson Senior High School, Class of 1961.
From high school John attended Lynchburg College ("The Lynchburg College, not Liberty" as he would say). In 1965, he received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in history and political science, followed in 1967 obtaining a Master of Education Degree. While at Lynchburg College he was a member of Alpha Phi Omega Fraternity, a service organization. Later, he also attended classes at the University of Virginia and Howard University.
John spent his working career from 1967 to 2000 in the Roanoke City Public Schools (35 years) as a teacher, but mostly as the elementary guidance counselor at Lincoln Terrace Elementary School for 23 years. He also taught at Stonewall Jackson Junior High, Jamison, Fairview, and Fishburn Park Elementary Schools. He served as the home-school counselor for several middle schools and was a teacher in the Adult Education classes at Jefferson High School. John loved his work in all these schools and made many lasting friendships and affected the lives of thousands of students over his 35 years.
John was a life member of the National Education Association and the Virginia Education Association and was a member and past president of the Roanoke City Retired Teachers Association.
John was also a 50-year plus member of the Williamson Road Masonic Lodge #163, The Roanoke Shrine Club and Kazim Temple and was a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason.
John was a devout Christian and until recent accidents and illnesses was able to participate in church activities. His church life began as an infant on the Cradle Roll at Waverly Place Baptist Church and remained an active member there until 2008. He served as a deacon, Sunday School teacher for the couples' adult class, was a choir member, and worked on many church committees. He and Darla were married there on August 17, 1968. Their daughters, Stephanie and Shannon, were saved and baptized there. Waverly will always be the home church for ministry and missions, and so many fond memories with our friends there.
His membership at Oakland Baptist Church began in 2010 due to his illness and difficulty getting across town. There, he was deacon, choir member, and served on various committees. As his health further declined, he joined Hollins Road Baptist Church.
The family would like to express our heartfelt thanks to John's special caregivers, Erica Robinson, April Garcia, Daniel Gray, Mariatu Koroma, and Sam Mansaray and to Heartland Hospice nurse, Regina Webb, and Chaplain Melton Johnson.
Visitation will be held at Oakey's North Funeral Home on Sunday, July 28, 2024, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. John's homegoing service will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, July 29, 2024, at Oakey's North Chapel officiated by the Rev. Trevor Clatterbuck, the Rev. Mark Washington, and the Rev. Daniel Gray. Interment will follow at Cedar Lawn Cemetery.
Flowers will be appreciated or contributions in John's memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation (for Dementia), the Parkinson's Foundation, or to the American Diabetes Society. Condolences may be expressed to the family at
