John Coffey Obituary

John Alfred Coffey

August 5, 1949 - November 15, 2023

John Alfred Coffey formerly of Roanoke, Va., went to be with his Heavenly Father on Wednesday, November 15, 2023, following a courageous battle with glioblastoma. He was surrounded in prayer by his family and pastor.

John was born in Roanoke on August 5, 1949, the youngest of Charles Douglas Coffey and Audrey Board Coffey's two children. He graduated from Cave Spring High School, but not before falling in love with Patricia Dillon through youth group at Ghent Grace Brethren Church. John and Patricia wed on February 3, 1968, and had been married for 55 years.

John was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Patricia; his daughter, Anne Coffey Edwards (Evans); his son, Charles Joseph Coffey; grandchildren, Isabel Grace Binder (Scott), 1st Lt. Evans Graham Edwards, USMC, Harrison Charles Edwards, and Carl Davis Edwards; great-granddaughter, Evelyn June Binder; his sister, Sarah Coffey Keys (Basil); his rescued Sheltie, Cassie; and a whole lot of extended family.

John is a graduate of Virginia Western Community College and a 1976 graduate of Virginia Tech. He retired as an account manager from Kraft Foods in 2009 after a 32-year career.

In 2010, John and Pat relocated from the Richmond area to Surfside Beach, South Carolina, fulfilling a lifelong dream of John's. They enjoyed opening "the beach house" to friends and family, creating cherished childhood memories for their grandchildren.

John loved a good laugh, Hokie football even when it didn't love him back, Texas Tavern, and golf.

John's family will host a visitation from 5 until 7 p.m. on Friday, November 17, 2023, at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel, 318 Church Avenue, SW in downtown Roanoke. John's going home service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, November 18, 2023, at First Baptist Church, 321 Marshall Avenue in Roanoke, followed by burial at Sherwood Memorial Park in Salem. Online condolences may be expressed to the family at www.Oakeys.com.
