John A. Ward, 83, passed away Tuesday, December 10, 2024, in Tyler, TX. He was born on September 15, 1941, in Staten Island, NY to John Ward and Agnes Daly Ward.
John served in the United States Marine Corps and was honorably discharged in 1971. He held several degrees from Wagner College, Purdue University, and Trinity University and was a professor at Minot State University (ND) and the University of the Incarnate Word (TX), retiring in 1989, and went on to be a biomedical researcher and statistician at Brooke Army Medical Center, retiring in 2015.
He was a life-long runner competing in marathons beginning in 1961 with the Boston Marathon. His hobbies included photography and drawing, and he was a prolific short story writer.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Paula Kelley Ward. He is survived by his daughter, Erin Ward Byers; son, Sean E. Ward; grandchildren, Angela Russo, Tony Russo, and Heather Ward Delgado; great-grandchildren, Joseph and Marilyn; sister and brother-in-law, Margaret and Darryl Reid; brother and sister-in-law, Ed and Theresa Ward; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Visitation for John will be held on Tuesday, December 17, 2024, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Stewart Family Funeral Home, 7525 Old Jacksonville Hwy. in Tyler, TX.
A second visitation will be held on Saturday, December 21, 2024, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Oakey's Funeral Services South Chapel, 4257 Brambleton Ave., Roanoke, VA with burial following at 2 p.m. in Evergreen Burial Park.
