Joyce Gibson Obituary

Joyce J. Gibson

March 28, 2025

Joyce J. Gibson of Roanoke, VA, passed away on Friday, March 28, 2025, from complications of a stroke at the age of 86. She was preceded in death by her parents, Pat and Sallie Jefferson (Arrington); and her brother, J.C. Jefferson and wife Barbara.

She is survived by her devoted husband of 65 years, Tommy Gibson. Also surviving are her children, Mike Gibson (Twila) and Jeff Gibson (Pam). She loved her grandchildren and spoke of them to anyone who would listen, Rob (Crystal) of Roanoke, Megan Caldwell (Ben) of Blue Ridge, and Kirk (Kathryn) of Troutville. She adored her great grandchildren and thought she had the best ones in the whole world, Bailey, Nash and Halle Gibson, Emerson Caldwell, Asher, Levi and Nola Gibson will all miss their Grams. Spending time with her family made her smile. She is also survived by Marcia Gibson, Dick and Sue Gibson and Doug and Judy Gibson and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Joyce grew up in Roanoke, VA graduating from Jefferson High School. She spent her whole life in the area. She and Tommy loved to travel, enjoying day trips, to the beach or out of the country, which she loved to plan. They also enjoyed square dancing with friends. She was a stay at home Mom, spending time with her sons and their activities as they grew. She was the bookkeeper/secretary for the family business, Gibson Radiator Shop.

She became a Christian at the age of 14 at the old Fallon Park Wesleyan Church (now Parkway Wesleyan). She was an active and loyal member of Parkway Wesleyan, involved with Women's Missions for many years. She was one of the first teachers of the Parkway Wesleyan Preschool. She was a strong lady, feisty, but always willing to encourage others. She was a cancer survivor from over twenty years ago. Sadly, her cancer resurfaced six years ago but she continued to fight.

The family would like to give a special thanks to the staff at PCU and Palliative Care at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. The incredible kindness and care you gave Joyce and her family was so appreciated.

A celebration of her life will be held at Parkway Wesleyan Church on Tuesday, April 1, 2025, at 2 p.m. with Pastor John Ott and Pastor Mike Lauridsen officiating. The family will receive friends two hours before the service at Parkway Wesleyan. A graveside service will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens.
