Joyce Kidd Obituary

Joyce Adams Kidd

March 12, 1935 - August 10, 2022

Joyce Ann Adams Kidd, born on March 12, 1935, passed away peacefully of natural causes on August 10, 2022.

Joyce was the third child and only daughter of Mary Ellen Meador Adams and James Kelly Adams of Roanoke, Virginia. She graduated from William Byrd High School in 1953 and worked as a bookkeeper for Merita Bakery before marrying her beloved husband Richard Lee Kidd of Vinton, Virginia in 1956. Joyce and Richard shared 64 years together in the Roanoke Valley before Richard's sudden passing in December, 2020.

Joyce took great pride in her family, her home, and her community. She was a devoted wife, a dedicated mother, an active member of her church, and a caring friend to many. Joyce enjoyed sewing, playing piano, traveling, and entertaining friends and family in her home. She embraced her role as Richard's wife and partner as he advanced in his 35-year career with Norfolk-Southern Corporation. When their children were in high school, Joyce reentered the workforce as a bookkeeper for Motor Parts of Roanoke, Inc. Later she worked with the Treasurer for the Town of Vinton until she and Richard retired in the 1990's to spend more time on travel and with family, especially their young grandson Andrew. In retirement, Joyce continued to be an active member of Vinton Baptist Church and a regular participant in the JOY Seniors Program.

Joyce is survived by daughter, Susan Kidd Fleming (Fred) of Matthews, N.C.; son, Michael Lee Kidd (Sandra) of Easton, Md.; grandson, Andrew Lee Kidd of Richmond, Va.; step-granddaughters, Katie Levitan of Easton, Md., and Robyn Levitan of Charlotte, N.C.; and step great-grandsons, Dylan Tawney of Easton, Md., and Jameson Christian, Leo Christian, and Walker Christian, of Charlotte, N.C.; nieces, Kim Adams, Dea Adams, Rose Marie Yopp, and Rhonda Caldwell; nephews, Jimmy and David Adams, and grand nephew, Trevor Adams, all of Roanoke, Va.

A memorial service will be held at Vinton Baptist Church on Thursday, October 6, 2022, at 3 p.m. The family will receive guests starting at 2 p.m. A short graveside service will follow at Mountain View Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation be made to a charitable organization of your choice.

Susan and Michael, please accept my deepest sympathy. You mom and dad did a good job! Mom's are the glue and the love that keep it all going, she is a lovely lady. As you and Susan know our Lord has your mom and dad in His eternal care. You are in my prayers, your GriefShare family is also supporting you and your family in prayer. My Christian brother and sister thank you for sharing this precious and special memorial with me. God Bless.

Susan and Mike and families, I am so sorry for your loss. Of course, loss of a loved one is always so hard. But, we all know that Joyce Ann is just going home! Meanwhile, treasure your special memories to help cope with that empty spot in your family and hearts. She was a great neighbor in my early years. As a young married woman, she was such a kind-hearted lady and gave so generously of herself to me (and all of the youth at Mt. Pleasant Baptist) in the late 50's and early 60's. Looking back, I can't imagine why she and "Uncle Richard" took on such loving roles for all of us, but I am forever grateful that they did.
Joyce was a shining example of real Christian lady. Much love to you all. "Bobo"
