When I first moved here from LA in '98, I was disappointed to not feel the 'Soul of the South'... not until I watched "Georgia Backroads" on PBS and heard Larry's songs and incredible voice. He expressed his feelings and views in ways no one else ever has, and his music touches me like no other.
Thank you, Steve, for providing this online guest book where I've been able to read and learn more about his life and what a terrific man he was.
Larry Jon, thanks for sharing your heart and life with us through your music!

My favorite songwriter, and one of the kindest people I ever met. I'll miss looking forward to that next opportunity to see him perform. The music he left behind will last forever, and I will certainly make it a point to make sure as many people as I possibly can, will hear it..
I have never played his music for ANYBODY that hasn't been blown away and become an instant fan...
R.I.P Larry Jon, and thank you for being so kind...
and inspirational...

Larry Jon took me under his wing one year when I was attending the Frank Brown through the kindness of his great friend Mickey Newbury. I was privileged to join him for his concerts, and Mickey's, I was fed countless delicious meals from his magic cookbook as were many others, and introduced to and made welcome by both their many friends and relatives.
And when I had to catch an early plane he insisted on getting up before dawn and driving me himself, casually mentioning as the sun began to rise that he could only see shadows mostly, due to cataracts at that time !
His generosity to a stranger has never been forgotten and he continued to regale me with his wonderful stories and voice up by telephone until a very few weeks ago when he sent me his latest cd and a poster to remember him by.
A great artist, a great friend and a great soul, it was my great good fortune to have known you Larry Jon..Your love will live on forever..

To Billy Joe & Family: I remember you & Larry Jon both growing up in our neighborhood on The Hill. We (Bill Jr., Charles, Jimmy, Betty, Barbara Jean and parents) lived on the corner of Heath Street and Wrightsboro Road.
Last year, after Don Rhodes gave me Larry Jon's unlisted North Augusta number, I called to reminisce about him winning the Sancken's Dairy Talent Show on the Miller Theatre stage back in the 1950s. He told me he won a gold watch, a paid trip to Savannah and
all the Sancken's ice cream he could eat! He said he sung MI-DOUBLE-S-I-DOUBLE-PI (Mississippi!) I asked if he'd sung that one lately and he laughed and admitted he hadn't. I am including his reminisces in a book about Augusta area retail dairies I'm researching. He later sent me an autographed photo which I treasure.
I thought you'd enjoy reading this anecdote from a very talented fellow.

I saw Larry Jon play at a little house near Nashville; the "Hillbilly Haiku" a few months ago.
Imagine me, not even knowing anything about him except that he had been loved by Mickey Newberry.
my heart came home to me that night, and sank into the softest flickerings of spirit
and for weeks afterward, I found my morning, and was refreshed.
