Martha Garrett Obituary

Martha Sue "Susie" McAfee Garrett

January 14, 1941 - October 28, 2025

Martha Sue "Susie" McAfee Garrett, a cherished mother, devoted grandmother, and loyal friend, was called home to our Lord and Savior, on Tuesday, October 28, 2025. Her life was a testament to her deep faith and steadfast love for her family.

Born in Roanoke, Va., of the late Dr. William T. and Constance M. McAfee, Susie attended Wasena Elementary and Woodrow Wilson Middle School and then graduated from Jefferson High School in 1959. She then pursued her passion for science at the University of Richmond, where she earned a degree in both biology and chemistry in 1963. Her academic achievements led her to a position as a microbiologist and virologist at Parke Davis in Detroit, MI, (now Pfizer) where she excelled in her research. Her promising career was a reflection of her intelligence and dedication.

After marrying the love of her life, Jerry Madison Garrett, Susie gave up her professional career to become a military wife. For nearly 60 years, she and Jerry built a family rooted in love and devotion. She embraced her roles as mom and grandma, pouring her entire heart into raising and caring for her children and grandchildren. Her family was the center of her world.

Susie's faith was the bedrock of her life. She was a dedicated servant at First Presbyterian Church, where she was raised, baptized and married and held many leadership roles, including elder and deacon and served on many committees. Her commitment to her faith and her community was further demonstrated through her service and contributions with her membership at Raleigh Court Presbyterian Church.

A survivor of breast cancer, Susie honorably and loyally enjoyed her dedicated years of volunteer service to Susan G. Komen for the Cure organization, helping others navigate their own battles.

Susie leaves behind her beloved husband, Jerry, and their children, William Thomas Garrett (Brandy) and Deborah Sue Garrett Wing (John). Her memory will also be treasured by her adoring grandchildren, Garrett Wing, Mason Wing; Lexi Garrett and Hunter Garrett. Additionally, she is survived by her three siblings, Constance McAfee Bibb, William H. McAfee (Marilyn), and Sarah Marie McAfee.

While her family and friends mourn her passing, they find comfort in knowing that her love of the Lord has brought her home. Her legacy of love, wisdom, and selfless service will forever be in their hearts.

The family extends its sincere gratitude to the Friendship Salem Terrace family for their excellent care, extraordinary love and lasting friendship.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate and honor Susie's life during a service at Raleigh Court Presbyterian Church, Roanoke, Va., at 2 p.m. on Monday, November 24, 2025. Internment will take place at Arlington National Cemetery on a date to be determined.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure on their http://www.info-komen.org/goto/Susie_Garrett website or by phone and the Friendship Residence Benevolence Fund: https://www.friendship.us/give-today. Condolences may be shared with her family by visiting www.Oakeys.com.
