Mary Surface Obituary

Mary Catherine Price Surface, 81, of Blacksburg, went peacefully to be with her Lord on Sunday, December 7, 2008. Catherine was born on February 14, 1927, to Leonard Law and Bethel Irene Hutchinson Price of Tom's Creek. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert H. Surface and two beloved sisters, Aleene Slusser and Gertrude Linkous. Catherine retired from Virginia Tech after 21 years of service. She was a longtime member of the New Mt. Zion Lutheran Church. Catherine was also a faithful member of the Coal Mining Heritage Association and of the Price Family Historical Society and a member of the Golden Years Club. Her unrealized dream in life was to become a school teacher. But later in life, Catherine served as an interpreter at Mabry Mill and as a teaching partner in Appalachian Studies working with Virginia Tech students. Catherine is survived by her beloved and devoted daughter, Betty S. Price and husband, Jimmie; and her very special grandson, Greg Price. She is also survived by her beloved sisters, Lou Ella Barr, of Blacksburg and Yvonne Nash, of Scottsdale, Arizona; and a beloved brother, Daniel Price and wife, Jolyn, of Blacksburg. Also special brother-in-law, Dallas Linkous Jr. Catherine is also survived by many special nieces and nephews, as well as a beloved church family and a nurturing community of friends. Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday, December 10, 2008, at 11 a.m., in the New Mt. Zion Lutheran Church with the Rev. Paul Hinlicky officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Friends may call anytime after 12 p.m. Tuesday, and the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday evening at McCoy Funeral Home, 150 Country Club Dr., Blacksburg.

My great aunt Catherine was one of a kind. She loved everyone. When I was younger I would stay with her while my dad worked. She always made my sister and I feel welcome at her house. Not a day will go by that I wont think about her and miss her but I have to keep in mind she is in a better place and I will see her again. Catherine was a wonderful women and I loved her very much.
Catherine once gave me a bear and on it, it said "do your best and god will do the rest." So I’m going to do my best knowing that she is in heaven and god will help me deal with her not being here on earth with me.

"Miss Catherine" as we called her was my Sunday school teacher for many years. I dearly loved this Godly woman and am so sorry for your loss. My earliest memories of church have Miss Catherine in them. She taught me a lot about the love of Jesus and I'll never forget her. You are all in my thoughts and prayers.

Life has it's seasons each with its own lessons. With the loss of your Mother, it may seem like winter. But as a loved one departs, the Lord gives His own Spirit to stand by the sides of those who grieve and there will come a Spring.

The truest end of life is to know the life that never ends.

What a nice lady; we met her while doing family history research and at the Jimmy Sheppard family reunion.

During our Sunday worship service we received word of Catherine's passing. Our pastor referred to Catherine as a 'saint' and truer heartfelt words were never spoken. I have never known a more devout Christian or unselfish, kind and loving women. You could always count on Catherine to give freely and generously of her time and talents. Catherine's passing will leave a void that the church and community will never be able to fill. We feel our lives have been enriched by having known Catherine. Our sincere smypathy and prayers are with each of you.
