Maurice Fisher Obituary

Maurice S. Fisher Sr., PhD.

October 19, 2021

Maurice S. Fisher Sr. PhD., 65, of Roanoke, Va., died on Tuesday, October 19, 2021, after a battle with congestive heart failure. He was in the comfort of his two adult children, Scotty and Lauren Fisher.

He was born in Roanoke in 1956 and was preceded in death by his parents, William E. Fisher and Audrey K. Fisher of Botetourt, and his uncle, Robert "Bobby" Fisher.

He is survived by his children; his daughter-in-law, Allison; and his precious grandchildren, Ainsley and Ginny.

Maurice Fisher was a proud graduate of Roanoke College where a professor reportedly scared him into reading his first book. He did not stop at one and, in fact, went on to publish two books of his own (with a third to be published soon). His works also frequented the pages of the Roanoke Times to the delight and exasperation of many.

Dr. Fisher lived his life for others. He was a proud clinical social worker who dedicated his life to helping people in their weakest moments. He genuinely hurt when they hurt (many times to his own detriment), and he cherished every single one of their victories along the way.

For most of his career, he worked three jobs as a therapist and gave his time to a free clinic once a week. Dr. Fisher did not do that because he had to; he did it because that is what he was born to do. He often joked when leaving for an appointment or engagement that he was "Off to do the Lord's work." But the Lord's work is truly what he did for so many.

Dr. Fisher was a proud Mason and Shriner (Catawba Lodge No. 342, Scottish Rite, and Kazim Shrine). In lieu of flowers or gifts, please consider a donation in his name to the Shriners Hospitals for Children.

Friends are invited to visit with the family from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 until 8 p.m. on Sunday, October 24, 2021, at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel, 318 Church Ave., Roanoke. A Funeral Service will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, October 25, 2021, at the funeral home with Rick Leftwich officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Burial Park. Condolences may be sent to the family online at www.oakeys.com.

He wouldn't remember me ,but he made a huge impact on my life . He was funny and genuinely cared . I can safely say I probably wouldn't be sober today if not for Maurice Fisher. Twenty six years as a recovering alcoholic ! While cleaning out some old files I found a paper he wrote titled "You And Your Crack " which always cracked me up ! The title , not the subject matter ! Just decided to look up his name and am saddened to find he passed , especially at such a young age . He was most assuredly a one of a kind and memorable human being . His passing is a huge loss for everyone who ever had the pleasure of meeting him . I will always remember him fondly . God Bless you Maurice Fisher .

One of the ways you can tell the impact of a person's life is how often the lessons they taught seem to surface in the lives of others. Maurice repeatedly showed how open honesty with clients, which often included calling them out on their manipulations, which showed me the need to get "blunt" in order to help them make progress. He also taught me the importance of recognizing "illness by diagnosis", which has also helped several of my clients and only irritated some of the other guilty ones. He is still missed by many.

What a nice description of a very dedicated and generous man. Maurice supervised my licensure for clinical social work and was a colleague I cherished running in to at conventions after he moved back to Roanoke. My sincerest condolences and prayers go out to his family.

Maurice will be missed by many people, including me. He helped many of my clients when others had not been successful with because of his unique style. He also taught me many things over the years that I continue to use in my mental health work. My one regret is that he didn't get his motorcycle, so we never got to ride together.
