Michael Thomas Obituary
Michael Thomas
November 28, 1941 - February 4, 2026
Michael James "Poppie" Thomas, 84, loving husband of Sandra Young Thomas, went home to be with his Lord on Wednesday, February 4, 2026. Born in Roanoke, he was the son of the late Alfred "Ray" Thomas, Sr. and the late Edna Gaynelle "Toots" Spangler Thomas Ridenour. He was preceded in death by his brother, Alfred Ray Thomas, Jr.
In addition to his wife, Sandra, of 62 years, he will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by his children, Kevin Michael Thomas (Kim), Jay Bradley Thomas (Christine) and Krista Thomas Beheler (Jason); grandchildren, Kory, Lance, Josie, Jack, Wyatt, and Emelia.
Michael was a long-time member of Melrose Baptist Church, where for many years he enjoyed teaching Sunday school, pouring his heart into preparing his weekly lessons. He also was a former member and deacon at Villa Heights Baptist Church. Michael was a graduate of Jefferson High School and National Business College, with a Business/Accounting degree. He went on to work for N&W, now Norfolk Southern Railway, for almost 40 years as a Payroll Accountant.
Michael loved sports, especially baseball and bowling. The New York Yankees was his favorite team, and he enjoyed seeing them play at Yankee Stadium. He coached a church baseball team and later coached his two sons. He was always in the stands cheering them on during their games. Michael thoroughly enjoyed attending Krista's gymnastic practices and tournaments. He bowled with the railroad league for 58 years and enjoyed every moment of it. Often, he chose to celebrate his birthday with his family at the bowling alley. He loved supporting all his grandchildren's many hobbies, talents, and athletic events. Later, he became very interested in tennis, as two of his grandchildren played for many years, never missing any of their matches.
Michael was an avid animal lover and enjoyed all the little strays that were brought home. He was a dedicated pet parent to his favorite pups, Missy, Hokie, Gus and his current mini dachshund, named Blue.
The family will receive friends from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, February 15, 2026 at Simpson Funeral Home, 5160 Peters Creek Road, Roanoke, VA 24019.
Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, February 16, 2026 in the Chapel of Simpson Funeral Home, 5160 Peters Creek Road, Roanoke, VA 24019 with Rev. Mark Mofield officiating. Interment will follow at Sherwood Memorial Park.
While flowers are appreciated, memorial donations may be made in Michael's memory to Melrose Baptist Church, 3520 Peters Creek Road, Roanoke, VA 24019.
The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to Good Samaritan Hospice and to the Visiting Angels staff for their compassionate and loving care for both Michael and his family. Also, a huge thank you to Krista, for her continued love and devotion to her dad while he was sick. Her countless hours while striving for his healing and comfort will be remembered forever. Michael was a real family man and touched the lives of so many with his kindness and love. He will be so dearly missed, but we find peace in knowing that he is in heaven and in the arms of the Lord.
