August 22, 1929-December 3, 2013 Richard (Dick) L. Wingfield Jr. departed this life on December 3, 2013. He was a native of Newport News and lived there most of his life. He moved to Smith Mountain Lake in April 2001.
He is survived by his devoted and loving wife of 62 years, Martha Ann Via Wingfield; son, Richard L. Wingfield III and wife Lisa of Pinehurst, N.C.; daughter, Via Ann Jewell and husband Mike of Mechanicsville, Va. He leaves four grandchildren, Brandon Wingfield and wife Lily of Jacksonville, Fla., Wesley Wingfield of Carlisle, Pa., Matthew Jewell and wife Melody of Groton, Conn., and Mia Puglisi and husband Jake of Richmond, Va.; along with four great-grandchildren including Jaden, Joel and Beau Wingfield and Morgan Puglisi; his sister, Mary Jane Hollingsworth of Troutdale, Va.; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Upon graduation from Lynchburg College in 1951, he entered the United States Air Force. A year later, he attended officer Candidate School and after 8 years of service was discharged as a Second Lieutenant.
Upon returning to Newport News, he completed his Masters of Education degree at the College of William and Mary with additional graduate studies at the University of Virginia and began a career in Education in the Newport News School System. He started as a teacher, athletic director, guidance counselor and tennis coach at Warwick HS. In 1964 he left Newport News to become principal at Randolph Henry HS in Charlotte County. In 1967, Wingfield returned to Newport News and was appointed Assistant Superintendent for Business Affairs for the Newport News School System. He served in this position for 22 years before retiring in 1989. After one month of retirement, he became Superintendent of Schools for Williamsburg for a six month interim period, assisting in the search for a new superintendent.
Dick was a member of the International Organization of School Business Officials and served on their Board of Directors. He served on the faculty of Old Dominion University in their Business Graduate School program teaching finance.
His civic duty included serving on the Board of Directors for The American Red Cross, The American Cancer Society, Make a Wish Foundation and others. In his free time and all through life he enjoyed the outdoors, working in the yard, cultivating roses, playing tennis, swimming, boating and jogging. He had a love for history and travel and saw as much as he could in this country and abroad. He loved the competition of college sports while supporting any Virginia team playing an out of state team, and was an avid Redskin fan. Dick was a member of Halesford Baptist Church and part of the Golden Agers.
A celebration service will be held at Halesford Baptist Church 11 a.m. Saturday, and the family will receive friends in the Fellowship Hall following the Memorial Service. The burial will be private and for family only at the Wingfield Cemetery in Snow Creek.

Martha, my thoughts have been with you. Dick was a great guy. He always looked out for me during my work in Adult Education and when I was with him in the Business Office. I was thinking about him a week or so before he died and wish I had of called.

If I'm not mistaken both he and his wife taught classes I attended in 1959 and 1960. Remember both as being kind and considerate teachers. John 5:28. Agape, ed Walthall.

Mr. Wingfield was a very dedicated person in helping Newport News Public Schools manage its limited funds in a very responsible and effective way for the benefit of students. I was proud to be a colleague of his from 1984 to 1989, when he retired. I visited in his home numerous times over the years with his dear wife Martha, and was always greeted with love and grace.
