Ronald Henry Obituary

Ronald Albert Henry, 71, of Poages Mill, Roanoke County, passed away suddenly and quietly while vacationing in Florida with his family on Saturday, June 25, 2011. He retired in 1996 from Norfolk and Southern Railway where he was the Superintendent of the Air Brake Division. He was a devoted and beloved member of Rosalind Hills Baptist Church where he loved and served his Lord faithfully. He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Lillian Henry; and siblings, Lewis Henry and Phillip Henry. Survivors include his beloved wife, Fern Y. Henry; daughters, Ronla Henry, of LaPlata, Md., and Lynette (Jimmy) Hill, of Greenville, Tenn.; stepdaughters, Michele Starkey, of Roanoke, and Tonya (Todd) Robertson, of Salem; grandchildren, Ashtyn Hill, Tyler Robertson, and Tori Robertson; brothers, Steve (Wanda) Henry, of Roanoke, and Sherman Henry, of Roanoke; sister-in-law, Gretchen Henry, of Roanoke; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and other family members. Ron was an incredible man who gave tirelessly of himself to help others in any way that he could. He was always ready to volunteer for any project needed, but he was the happiest when he was on a golf course. He loved his family dearly and had a special affection for his grandchildren. While our hearts are heavy now, we will rejoice in his life and the memories that we have made with him. Funeral Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, June 30, 2011, at Rosalind Hills Baptist Church with the Rev. Brad Smith officiating. Interment will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Food Pantry or to the Deacon Ministry at Rosalind Hills Baptist Church. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, June 29, 2011, at Oakey's South Chapel, 540-989-3131.

To Ron's family my deepest sympathy.Ron was a classmate and teammate. I really enjoyed our reconnection and conversation at Andrew Lewis High School's 50th class reunion in 2008.
This world is a better place because God chose to share Ron with all of us

To the Henry clan,
I am sorry to hear of Ron's passing. As usual I didn't see the paper and Turk didn't connect the name and so didn't mention it to me. I have know both sides of the family for a very long time. I grew up with the Henry family as neighbors and "adopted" the Starkey girls as kids (so I got Fern for a sister too). It is strange how life is connected and interwoven. I love my Salem girls and their mom and am sorry for your loss. I am also saddened for the Henry siblings as they mourn another loss in their family.
We will all meet by and by.

I worked with Ron early in my railroad career with Norfolk Southern, and he was truly a fine individual and co-worker. He was always happy to help a young person and pass along his knowledge. I hope you are comforted by your memories during this difficult time.

fern....all i can say right now is...peace. i am on a scout reservation on the maryland eastern shore with 50 fine young men...doing what i can to make a difference in their lives. i just found out and wish i could be there...but i realize ron would tell me that this is important work and to stay put! you know i loved the man! i have two great mentors that have made me who i am as a railroader, a family man, and as a friend to many -- one is my dad, and the other is ron henry. i have missed him so much and i am heartbroken. i will celebrate for all he has done for me every day of my life. love to you and the rest of your wonderful family!

Dear Fern and family,
You know that my heart is heavy with the news of Ron's home-going. He was my "big brother" when I was a child, and I loved him dearly then. When we reconnected at RHBC, the love continued and grew to include you and the family, as well. The world needs more men of faith and integrity like Ron, and I mourn his passing - but rejoice in knowing he is at home with his Lord. May God comfort you and bring you peace.
With love,
Rick and Becky

Pop,
When my mother chose you to spend her life with, she won the grand prize. And the day that you married her, I gained an additional father and my children have been blessed to have 3 complete sets of grandparents. I will miss you more than imaginable and I have no doubt that you will watch over us all for eternity. God's kingdom is a happier place now and I feel sure that the golf game in heaven just got more intersting... Love you and Miss you so much,
Tonya
