Sherrill Leroy Smith, age 81, departed his earthly life on September 1, 2023 in Salem, Virginia. Sherrill was born July 7, 1942 in Suffolk, Virginia. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard Giles Smith and Mary Ellen Early Smith.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Virginia Maxine Funkhouser Smith; his four children Duane Kevin Smith of Salem, Virginia; Stimis Ray Smith and wife Teresa of Salem, Virginia; Sonja Leigh Smith Overholt and husband Clay of Lynchburg, Virginia; Diron Darst Smith and wife Dana of Prosper, Texas. His nine grandchildren: Duane's children Morgan Renee Smith Osborne and husband Collin and Madison Mackenzie Smith; Stimis's children Annalise Michelle Smith and Harrison Wirt Smith; Sonja's children Jessica Nicole Overholt Phelps and husband Chase and Kristina Skye Overholt; Diron's children Braeden Joseph Smith, Kathryn Elizabeth Smith and Delaney Reagan Smith.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of your choice.
The family will receive friends, Tuesday, September 5, 2023 from 2 to 4 p.m. & 6 to 8 p.m. at Simpson Funeral Home Peters Creek Road Chapel. Services will be held Wednesday, September 6, 2023 at 6 p.m. at Simpson Funeral Home Peters Creek Road Chapel.

I met Mr. Smith many in the early 2000's when I sold real estate. He called me about some propery I had listed and when we met at the site, I found him to be very knowledgable and straightforward.- two great characteristics in business. Later, our paths crossed with my employment at the City of Salem. He was one of those people you don't forget. I am sorry to hear of his passing and my condolences go out to the family. May God be of comfort to each of you at this difficult time.

We are sadden by the death of our "funny man", he was a kind hearted spirit, we always enjoyed being in his company. I just hope upstairs is ready for his sense of humor. Our sincere sympathy to the family . He will certainly be missed.

I Pray that Sherrill went Peacefully. I Pray the Holy Spirit Comforts The Family and All that Knew Him. I knew Him as a Fellow VCDL Member. Sherrill was a Very Good & Decent Man! He'll be Missed, But We'll see Him Again In Heaven Where He Now has a Brand New Body Full of Joy & Happiness!

I met Sherrill a number of years ago through our involvement in VCDL. Over those years, we developed a true bond. We shared good times at breakfasts at Chip and Jo´s, gun shows, lunch in his office, the Salem Fair, NRA banquets, and Republican breakfasts. I always knew where I stood with Sherrill. If you did not want to hear his version of the truth, you´d better not have asked him, and most times you didn´t even have to ask as it was coming out anyway! His word was his bond and in that sense Sherrill was a true gentleman. I always considered him a true friend, and as for my part, he will be sorely missed as true friends are hard to come by.
