Steven Colston Obituary

Steven Jay "Steve" Colston

May 6, 1960 - April 29, 2022

Steven Jay "Steve" Colston, 61, of Roanoke, Virginia, went to be with the Lord on Friday, April 29, 2022.

Steve was born on May 6, 1960, in Rome, New York, which explained his lifelong fandom of the New York Knicks, Giants, and Yankees. He graduated from Cave Spring High School and attended East Tennessee State University before transferring to Virginia Tech.

Steve was a skilled videographer, ad salesman, guitarist, songwriter, cook, and fiction editor. His many friends will remember him by his quick wit, love of the Virginia Tech Hokies, and his passion for rock and roll, particularly the music of Tom Petty and Bruce Springsteen. He also enjoyed playing fantasy basketball, of which he once famously said, "My team is better than it looks on paper."

Steve is survived by his mother, Johanna Colston; his brother, Chris Colston, and Chris's wife, Melanie; his nephew, Kevin Colston; his niece, Danielle Colston; and his fiancée, Bernadette Clemens. He was predeceased by his father, C. James Colston.

A celebration of life memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 21, 2022, at Covenant Presbyterian Church, 1831 Deyerle Road, Roanoke, Va., with a reception to follow.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made in Steve's name to the Virginia Tech Athletic Fund, P.O. Box 10307, Blacksburg, VA 24062, "in memory of Steve Colston."

The family wishes to thank the Rev. Dr. Kyle Allen of Covenant and Charles Richard of Oakey's Funeral Home for their handling of the arrangements. Online condolences may be made to the family at www.oakeys.com.

Arrangements entrusted to Oakey's South Chapel, Roanoke, Va., (540) 989-3131.

I was just reflecting on Steve Colston. I remember him as a really good guy in Jr High and High school that I always enjoyed talking with. After High School, he went to ETSU, then transferred to VT and became a Hokie fan. Steve is one of those you folks in your outer orbits that look back on and wish you had spent more time with him.

Chris and Family ~
I am so sad to hear about the loss of your brother, Steve. I will keep you all in my thoughts and prayers in the days ahead. I know that Steve was a true Hokie fan, who will be missed by many.
