Susie Hines Obituary

Susie Phipps Hines, 84, of Elk Creek, Va., the Hines Branch Community, passed away Sunday, August 30, 2009, at Grayson Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Independence, Va. She was preceded in death by her husband, Warren Hines. She was born May 20, 1925, at Mouth of Wilson, Va., to the late Stark and Ellen Hash Phipps. She was a member of Summerfield United Methodist Church, Summerfield Community Club, Home Demonstration Club, United Methodist Women, VFW Auxiliary and Order of the Eastern Star. She was an active volunteer of the American Red Cross as a Blood Mobile Coordinator, the American Cancer Society and a regular participant in Relay For Life and the Hospice Program. She was voted Woman of the Year by the Grayson County VFW Post 7726 and Ladies Auxiliary April 19, 1985. Surviving are two daughters and spouses, Suzanne and Frederick Sitterding, of Elk Creek and Hartfield, Va., and Rebekah and Dr. Will Roberts, of Bristol, Tenn.; two sons and spouses, Eddie and Evelyn Hines, of Galax, Va., and Jeff and Bonnie Hines, of Elk Creek, Va.; six grandchildren; four greatgrandchildren; four sisters and and a spouse, Aileen Cox and Lucy Wheatley, both of Independence, Va., Ruby Wagner, of Marion, Va. and Ruth and Cy Mitchell, of Elizabethtown, Ky.; four brothers and spouses, Bill and Mary Phipps, Tom and Phyllis Phipps and Sam and Joann Phipps, all of Independence, Va., and Robert and Dorothy Phipps, of Winston-Salem, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews also survive. The body is at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home, Independence, Va. Funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. on Thursday, September 3, 2009, at Summerfield United Methodist Church, Fries, Va., with interment in Summerfield Cemetery. The Rev. Vicki Neese and the Rev. Gloria L. Rhudy officiating. Graveside rites will be conducted by Grayson County VFW Post 7726 Ladies Auxiliary. The family will receive friends one hour preceding the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family sincerely asks that memorial contributions be made to Elk Creek Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 130, Elk Creek, Va. 24326 or Summerfield United Methodist Church, c/o Barbara Rhudy, 1826 Mt. Zion Road, Elk Creek, Va. 24326 or Grayson County VFW Post 7726 Ladies Auxiliary, c/o Shirley Gordon, P.O. Box 725, Independence, Va. 24348. The family will be at the residence of Suzanne and Frederick Sitterding, 1189 Carsonville Road, Elk Creek, Va., where friends may call at any time. Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home, Independence, Va., is serving the Hines family.

Suzanne,
My heart is filled with tears. I am so sorry to hear of the loss of your mother and my friend susie. I know she is looking down and smiling and saying that's my girl. I will miss her smile and her wonderful hugs. God knew he needed a special rose and came down and pick a beautfuil one for his garden. Suzanne i love you and will keep in touch.

To all of your family. I am so sorry for your loss and I didn't even know it unit today due to being out of town. I will always remember your Mother as she always make a point to speak and smile every time we cross paths. Most of the time she always had a little advice for me and more time that not she was right and I needed it as well. God Bless You All.
